We are currently seeking a professional, patient-focused Self-Pay Collections Specialist to join our team. This role is ideal for someone who is compassionate, detail-oriented, and confident navigating sensitive financial conversations with professionalism and empathy.
Position Summary
The Self-Pay Collections Specialist is responsible for follow-up and resolution of self-pay account balances. This role manages inbound and outbound patient communications related to payments, payment arrangements, insurance updates, and account resolution while maintaining a high standard of customer service and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities
- Contact patients regarding outstanding balances through inbound and outbound calls
- Collect payments and establish payment arrangements as appropriate
- Accurately document all account activity and payment discussions within the billing system
- Assist patients with billing questions, concerns, and account disputes in a calm and professional manner
- Escalate complex account issues to leadership when necessary
- Verify and update insurance information and determine eligibility for active coverage
- Coordinate billing updates when balances may need to be submitted to a third-party payer
- Return patient calls promptly and provide excellent customer support
- Support general office and administrative tasks as needed
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in physician billing, medical collections, or a healthcare revenue cycle environment preferred
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to navigate difficult conversations professionally and respectfully
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and documentation practices
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel
- Experience with NextGen or similar medical billing/practice management systems preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
- Prior call center and/or claims experience is a plus
