Senior Accountant

At GreenOak Accounting, our clients don't just get numbers, they get a trusted advisor who helps them understand their business and make better decisions. If you're an experienced accountant who loves working directly with clients, embraces AI and emerging tech, and is ready to grow into a leadership role, this is your seat at the table. We specialize in accounting for mental health and physical therapy practices, and we're looking for someone who's curious, client-ready, and constantly growing.

Salary: $65,000 - $75,000

In this position you will manage 20-30 clients independently, serving as the primary point of contact, analyzing what's going on in a client's business, and leading client meetings by interpreting and presenting financial data. GreenOak Accounting is the industry leader in accounting for mental health/behavioral health and physical therapy practices. Our teams are specialized—you'll work exclusively within one practice vertical, and we provide extensive industry training so you can hit the ground running. What we won't teach: the accounting itself. You should already have that down.

You have the heart of a teacher and a strong work ethic. You're personable, genuinely care about your clients' success, work hard without being told to, and get real satisfaction from helping someone understand something that used to intimidate them. We are looking for someone who is actively working toward a management role, not just open to it someday. We promote from within, and we want candidates who are consistently expanding their skills, pursuing credentials, and raising their hand to lead.

The accountant is expected to be able to handle 80-90% of the work independently, perform a self-review, and reach out to their manager as needed. The manager is responsible for reviewing, training and developing their team with a constant feedback loop, so you can expect regular check-ins and an opportunity to grow.

Are YOU the ideal candidate?

Who you are:

  • CPA/EA strongly preferred or actively pursuing one
  • 5+ years accounting/bookkeeping experience
  • You actively use AI tools in your work and are eager to adopt new technology (candidates who haven't or aren't willing to integrate AI into their workflow are not a fit for this role)
  • You are comfortable leading client meetings via Zoom and presenting financial data, not just preparing it
  • You are proficient in Excel and/or Google Sheets
  • You love working with clients and having a direct impact on their business
  • You are an interpreter of data, not just a reporter of it. You use your expertise to advise clients, connect the numbers to business decisions, and communicate financial insights in plain language
  • You have a desire to do more than just crunch the numbers; you want to help clients understand their financials in a way that actually makes sense to them
  • You have strong critical thinking skills
  • You would like to develop your CFO-level skills
  • When you don't know the answer, you figure out what it is
  • You're great at juggling multiple priorities and like to stay busy
  • You have strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • You are tech-savvy and aren't afraid to maximize the tools at your disposal
  • You love helping people, thinking outside the box, going the extra mile
  • You are confident in your accounting skills, while knowing when to say "let me check on that" in order to give your client accurate information
  • You have a whatever-it-takes attitude to meet the needs of our customers
  • You have the organizational skills and attention to detail required to manage your projects
  • You are consistently learning—whether that's pursuing credentials, deepening your niche knowledge, or building leadership skills

What you'll receive:

  • Full fringe benefit package (Major Medical (UHC), Dental, Vision, Life, Full Supplemental)
  • Tuition Reimbursement of up to $2500 per year for accounting courses, EA prep and CPA prep courses
  • No cost CE/CPE through CCH
  • Generous PTO plan based on years of service
  • 6 Paid holidays with 3 additional floating holidays
  • 401k package (3% matched at 100% and additional 2% matched at 50%)
  • Extensive training and support through our New Hire Buddy program
  • A dedicated team manager and smaller teams of 3-5
  • A clear and structured succession route to a management position
  • Work/Life balance
  • Respect and autonomy

People who have done well in this position:

  • Staff accountants stuck at a small firm with little or no room for growth (whenever possible we promote managers from within!)
  • An accountant who wants to have more client-facing time, not just crunching numbers in the background
  • Tax accountants who are burned out on the seasonal grind and want steadier, more predictable hours year-round—plus the chance to build real, long-term relationships with their clients
  • Hard workers who are done going it alone and are ready to do what they do best—great accounting—as part of a collaborative, supportive team.

What your typical day would look like:

Note: The schedule below is one example of how a day might be structured—your actual day will vary based on your client load, meeting schedule, and priorities. Client meetings, calls, and check-ins happen throughout the day.

8am: Answer emails, plan the day ahead. Review notes and financials ahead of today's client meetings.

9am: Team meeting with your manager and peers. Align on priorities, ask for help with any issues, look ahead at the upcoming client meetings.

10am: New client kick-off call. You're onboarding a practice owner who just joined GreenOak—you walk them through the process, get view-only access to their bank accounts, learn about their business, and start identifying quick wins you can bring back to them next month.

11am: Client work (reconcile accounts, perform a self-review, draft analysis for an upcoming meeting)

Noon: Lunch break

1pm: A client calls—their payroll isn't processing correctly and it needs to be resolved today. No prep needed, you jump on the phone and help them work through it in real time.

1:30pm: Answer emails (follow up on a W9 request, help a client understand a line item in last month's P&L)

2pm: Monthly client meeting. You've been asked to walk through their leadership compensation structure and whether it still makes sense at their current revenue. You also update their cash flow forecast together, review KPIs, flag a trend you've been watching, and end with a clear action list for both sides.

3:30pm: Client work

4:30pm: Email check, review notes and reports for tomorrow's client meetings
