MP Plumbing is a family-owned plumbing contractor serving the Portland metro area. With a team of approximately 25 employees, we perform both service and construction work and are focused on maintaining strong financial systems that support steady growth, operational clarity, and excellent customer service.
We are seeking a Controller who will oversee the company’s accounting operations, ensure financial accuracy, maintain regulatory compliance, and provide financial insight to company leadership. This role is responsible for managing accounting processes, supervising AR/AP functions, and producing reliable financial reports that help guide business decisions.
Responsibilities
1. Revenue & Receivables Management
- Oversee billing processes for service and construction work
- Monitor accounts receivable aging and collections
- Ensure completed work orders are billed promptly
- Identify and resolve unbilled or delayed revenue items
- Maintain controls that prevent revenue leakage
2. Expense & Payables Management
- Oversee vendor bill entry and payment processes
- Review accounts payable aging and manage vendor relationships
- Ensure expenses and job costs are recorded in the correct accounting period
- Maintain internal controls for purchasing and vendor payments
- Maintaining pricebook and inventory management
3. Cash Management & Bank Controls
- Perform and review monthly bank and merchant account reconciliations
- Monitor cash balances and coordinate transfers between accounts
- Ensure accurate recording of merchant fees and bank charges
- Support company cash flow planning
4. Financial Close & Reporting
- Manage monthly close process and accounting period controls
- Record journal entries, accruals, and adjustments
- Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules
- Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting reports
- Provide job profitability and financial performance insights to ownership
5. Payroll, Benefits & Compliance
- Reconcile payroll activity and related liabilities
- Review benefit billing and payroll deductions
- Coordinate workers compensation reporting and related compliance
- Ensure payroll-related liabilities are properly recorded
6. Tax & Regulatory Compliance
- Manage federal, state, and local tax filings (payroll, CAT, B&O, etc.)
- Prepare and file annual 1099 contractor reports
- Coordinate with external CPA for tax preparation and year-end reporting
- Maintain compliance with regulatory reporting requirements
- Monitor accounts receivable aging and collections

Qualifications
- 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction or trades
- Strong understanding of job costing and service billing
- Proficiency with Sage accounting software or similar systems preferred
- Knowledge of payroll taxes and regulatory compliance
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to communicate clearly with management and office staff
- Demonstrated expertise in financial report writing, balance sheet reconciliation, account analysis, and general ledger management.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data accurately.
- Experience managing cash management functions along with forecasting and budgeting activities.
- Ability to translate complex financial concepts simply and clearly to diverse audiences through easy-to-understand report writing.

Pay: $55.00 - $65.00 per hour
