About the Role:

We are looking for a highly experienced Senior Backend Engineer to take ownership of our backend ecosystem. This role is critical to ensuring system scalability, performance, and reliability while simplifying complex legacy domains without disrupting business-critical workflows. You will play a key role in shaping architecture, improving operational maturity, and driving high-quality engineering standards across the platform.

Our primary stack is PHP/Laravel, but we care far more about how you reason about scalability, data, and reliability than which framework you've used. If you've built and operated high-performance backends in any modern language or framework and can ramp on Laravel, we want to talk to you.

Key Responsibilities:

System Design & Ownership

• Own backend services end to end — from architecture and design trade-offs through deployment and production operation
• Set architectural direction and the engineering standards others build on
• Refactor and simplify complex legacy systems without disrupting business-critical workflows
• Drive high-quality engineering practices: testing, code reviews, and clear API/documentation standards (OpenAPI or equivalent)

Distributed Systems & High-Scale Architecture

• Design systems that stay fast and reliable as traffic, data, and complexity grow
• Make sound trade-offs around service boundaries, data flow, consistency, and failure modes
• Own queues and asynchronous processing for high-throughput workloads
• Build for resilience — graceful degradation, retries, and recovery under load

Performance & Database Scaling

• Own database design, schema architecture, and data modeling at scale
• Diagnose and eliminate bottlenecks across queries, indexes, caching layers, and hot paths
• Work across multiple databases and analytics workflows (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL/Redshift-style queries)
• Manage migrations and safe data transitions without downtime

DevOps, Infra & Cloud

• Drive production readiness across CI/CD pipelines, environments, and deployments
• Work with containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and infrastructure delivery
• Build in observability, monitoring, and sound secrets management
• Use cloud services effectively (AWS preferred — e.g., SQS, SNS, SES, S3)

Integrations & APIs

• Design secure, scalable APIs
• Lead integrations with third-party services across payments, media, CRM, and publishing platforms

What We're Looking For
Core

• 7+ years building and operating production backend systems
• Deep understanding of scalability, distributed systems, and high-performance architecture
• Strong database fundamentals: schema design, query optimization, and data integrity at scale (MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar)
• Solid command of async processing, queues, and caching (Redis or equivalent)
• Hands-on with Docker and modern delivery: CI/CD, Git; Kubernetes a plus
• Cloud experience (AWS preferred) with an instinct for reliability and observability
• A track record of owning systems end to end and making them simpler

Strongly Preferred

• Strong proficiency in Laravel (PHP 8.2+, Laravel 11 ecosystem — Sanctum, Fortify, Eloquent) is our primary stack and a major plus
• Experience leading legacy system migration and modernization
• Large-scale relational database optimization
