Senior Backend Engineer – Platform (Ruby or Node.js)

We are looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer – Platform to lead a high-impact platform transformation involving large-scale API rewrites, third-party vendor integrations, and backend architecture modernization.

This is a strategic engineering role with ownership over core domains such as pricing, inventory, search, and platform infrastructure. You will help establish the backend as the single source of truth, consolidating business logic currently distributed across frontend and multiple services.

Our engineering organization is undertaking a major architectural reset to improve scalability, reliability, and development velocity. Pricing and inventory systems are currently fragmented, making changes risky and slowing product delivery.

As a Staff Engineer, you will:

• Define backend architecture and technical standards
• Drive API redesign and service consolidation
• Lead integrations with multiple external vendors
• Improve observability, reliability, and operational excellence
• Mentor engineers and influence technical direction across multiple teams

Key Responsibilities

• Architect and build scalable backend systems using Ruby on Rails or Node.js
• Design robust APIs and backend services for complex business domains
• Consolidate pricing and inventory logic into a unified backend platform
• Establish API contracts, coding standards, and observability practices
• Lead technical decision-making and mentor engineering teams
• Build reliable production systems with strong operational ownership
• Collaborate with product, data, and platform teams to accelerate delivery

Required Skills

• Strong experience with Ruby on Rails or Node.js
• Proven experience operating at Staff Engineer or senior technical leadership level
• Deep expertise in backend architecture, API design, and distributed systems
• Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and MongoDB
• Strong AWS cloud experience
• Experience with Docker, containerized services, and AWS ECS
• Operational ownership of production systems, including monitoring and incident response

Pay: $200,000.00 - $250,000.00 per year
