Senior Communications Strategist

We are seeking a Senior Communications Strategist to support the Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation at the U.S. Department of Energy. This is a high-visibility role supporting a key pillar within the office, working directly with the Deputy Assistant Secretary to drive consistent, coordinated communications across multiple technology offices.
You will be the connective tissue between the front office and the technology program offices — translating complex research and policy developments into clear, strategic communications for external and internal audiences.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the primary communications point of contact for the Energy Technologies pillar, supporting the Deputy Assistant Secretary in coordinating all external and internal communications
  • Develop and maintain a consistent communications strategy across multiple technology offices within the pillar
  • Draft and edit a wide range of materials including press statements, talking points, speeches, fact sheets, newsletters, and stakeholder correspondence
  • Coordinate messaging across technology offices and manage approval processes
  • Manage events, in-person and digital, by coordinating presenters, providing talking points, attending event briefings and organizing event requests for approval
  • Manage digital communications touchpoints including web content and social media in coordination with the digital team
  • Build strong working relationships with communications counterparts across the technology offices and the broader DOE communications enterprise
  • Identify and flag emerging communications needs, risks, and opportunities
  • Manage requests and the approval process for travel, events, and speaking engagements as needed
  • Provide ad hoc support to the pillar chief of staff, senior advisors, and tech office directors

Requirements

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and at least 10 years of experience. Alternatively, must have a Master’s degree in a relevant field and 7 years of experience.
  • Must be based in Washington, D.C. – This onsite role will report to federal client locations daily.
  • U.S. citizenship is required with verbal and written fluency in English
  • Must be able to receive and maintain a federal security clearance (public trust level)

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in federal, state, or local government; public affairs; national brands; or regulated industries.

Base Compensation

  • Base compensation: $110,000 to 140,000. Actual compensation is subject to variation due to factors such as location, education, years of experience, and candidate skillset.

Employee Benefits

Akoya provides generous benefits for its full-time employees including:
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Eleven federal holidays and paid time off
  • Flextime to navigate the unexpected
  • And more!
