Senior Copywriter

CONTINGENT POSITION — PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING

Genius Consulting is competing for a $19M state contract with the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). We are building our proposed team now, before our proposal submission on March 6, 2026. If you are selected, your name and resume will be included in our official bid to the state.

This position activates only if we are awarded the contract (anticipated April 2026). Before that, we are asking for two things only: your resume and a signed letter of intent confirming you are committed to joining the team if we win.

No work. No payment. No obligation — until we win.

WHY THIS OPPORTUNITY IS WORTH YOUR COMMITMENT

The California Brand Campaign is one of the most significant state communications initiatives in recent history — a $19M effort to tell California's economic story to investors, business leaders, and the world, timed to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Your name will be on the proposal. If we win, this campaign will be on your resume for the rest of your career.

We are not looking for people who might show up. We are looking for people who are in — and who want to be part of something that matters.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

We do not need a writer who hedges. We do not need a writer who softens facts with qualifiers or buries the lead in bureaucratic language. We need a writer who can look at California's economic record — the largest agricultural economy in the nation, the birthplace of the internet, the home of half of America's billion-dollar startups — and write about it with the confidence and pride those facts deserve.

This campaign will speak to investors in New York, executives in Chicago, journalists in Washington, and voters across California. Every single word in every single piece needs to do real work. If you are that writer, we want you on this proposal.

THE ROLE

The Senior Copywriter writes across every touchpoint of the California Brand Campaign — from six-second digital ads to long-form op-eds to video scripts to executive talking points. You own the campaign's brand voice, develop the voice guide, and ensure that every piece of copy produced by anyone on the team reflects that voice consistently from launch to close.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Write copy for all campaign materials: digital ads, social content, video scripts, website, OOH, and email
  • Develop and own the campaign's brand voice guide and tone-of-voice documentation from day one
  • Write scripts for two hero brand films, eight industry spotlight videos, and 20+ social short-form pieces
  • Draft op-eds and bylined articles for placement in national business and policy publications
  • Develop spokesperson talking points and media briefing documents for GO-Biz leadership and trusted messengers
  • Adapt messaging for six distinct audience segments without ever losing brand consistency
  • Collaborate tightly with the Creative Director so copy and visual direction always work together
  • Support executive presentation writing and speechwriting for GO-Biz and agency leadership as needed

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • 5+ years of professional copywriting experience in an agency or in-house brand environment
  • Portfolio demonstrating work across digital advertising, video scripting, and long-form written content
  • Experience writing for government agencies, economic development organizations, or public affairs clients
  • Ability to write in a confident, data-forward, assertive voice that is never defensive or bureaucratic
  • Strong instincts for adapting tone and style across very different platforms and audience segments

NICE TO HAVE

  • Experience writing for California state agencies or California-focused brands
  • Background in journalism, particularly business or investigative writing
  • Experience writing scripts for brand documentary or cinematic storytelling video formats

WHAT HAPPENS IF WE WIN

Upon contract award by GO-Biz (anticipated April 2026), this position activates immediately. You will be brought on as a full-time team member for the duration of the contract through December 31, 2026, with the strong possibility of extension. Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with your experience — we will discuss specifics with every candidate we select for our proposed team.

WHAT WE ARE ASKING OF YOU RIGHT NOW

  • Submit your resume so we can include you in our proposal to GO-Biz
  • Sign a letter of intent confirming you are committed to joining the team if we win
  • Be available for a GO-Biz finalist interview if we advance to that stage (weeks of March 16 and 23, 2026)
  • Be ready to start in April 2026 if we are awarded the contract

That is it. No work before the award. No payment before the award. But we do need genuine commitment — your name goes into a formal state proposal and GO-Biz evaluators will see it. We need people who are serious.
