About Bitscopic
Bitscopic is a profitable, founder-owned healthcare data and analytics company. We run a long-standing research and development partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, with data spanning all 1,300 VA facilities and more than 10 million patient records. Our platform powers clinical surveillance, genomics, and public health products used across one of the largest integrated health systems in the country.
PraediAlert is our real-time clinical surveillance and alerting product. It ingests live clinical data feeds from VA facilities and turns them into timely, actionable signals for infection control, antimicrobial stewardship, and patient safety. Behind those signals sits a large, high-volume Oracle data platform. The speed and reliability of that platform decide whether clinicians get alerts in time. That is where this role lives.
About the Role
We are hiring a Senior Data Engineer with deep Oracle expertise to own the database layer behind PraediAlert. You will write and optimize the PL/SQL that drives our clinical data processing, tune queries and schemas against a large and growing dataset, and set the performance and reliability bar for data that people depend on. This is a hands-on, senior database engineering role for someone who reads execution plans for sport and treats a slow query as a problem worth solving properly.
Clinical data lands in Oracle through HL7 pipelines from hundreds of facilities. The hard engineering problem is keeping that data clean, consistent, and fast to query at scale. You will lead that work.
What You Will Do
- Design, write, and optimize PL/SQL: stored procedures, packages, functions, and triggers that power PraediAlert's clinical data processing.
- Tune query and schema performance against high-volume clinical data: analyze execution plans, rewrite expensive queries, design indexing and partitioning strategies, and manage optimizer statistics.
- Own Oracle schema design and evolution as data volume and product requirements grow across VA facilities.
- Lead performance work on the data platform, including stabilizing and improving query performance on large, growing clinical tables.
- Design data lifecycle, partitioning, and archiving strategies for tables that grow continuously.
- Establish monitoring on database health, slow queries, job performance, and data quality.
- Use approved AI coding tools to speed up development: generate and refactor PL/SQL, draft test cases, and accelerate documentation, with human review of every output before it ships.
- Apply AI to reduce manual toil in the data pipeline, such as flagging anomalies in incoming feeds, suggesting data-quality rules, and surfacing slow queries worth tuning
Required Qualifications
- 6 or more years of professional data or database engineering experience, with a track record of owning production database systems end to end.
- Deep, hands-on Oracle expertise: advanced PL/SQL (stored procedures, packages, functions, triggers), performance tuning, execution plan analysis, indexing and partitioning, and optimizer and statistics management.
- A demonstrated record of tuning queries and schemas for high-volume transactional or analytical workloads.
- Strong SQL and relational data modeling skills.
- Experience with ETL and ELT pipeline design, especially normalizing inconsistent, real-world data from multiple sources.
- Proficiency in a scripting or programming language (Python, Java, or Scala) for tooling and orchestration.
- U.S citizen or green card holder. This role supports federal healthcare contracts; eligibility for a background investigation will be assessed during hiring.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with VA or other federal healthcare data environments.
- Experience with Oracle enterprise features such as RAC, Data Guard, or the partitioning option, and with Oracle on cloud infrastructure (AWS RDS for Oracle or OCI).
- Experience planning or executing a database migration from Oracle to PostgreSQL or a cloud-native platform.
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or Claude Code) and good judgment about when to trust and when to verify AI output.
- Working knowledge of clinical terminology standards (LOINC, SNOMED CT, ICD-10, RxNorm).
How We Work
Bitscopic is a fully distributed, remote-first company. We value clear written communication, strong ownership, and engineers who hold a high reliability bar without being told to. You will have direct access to founders and decision-makers, and your work will reach real clinical users.
