Senior Data Scientist

Luna Health created Sleep-Only Automation — automated insulin delivery that works while you sleep and disappears when you wake. We're a venture-backed medical device startup that makes the world’s smallest insulin patch pump, solving the biggest problem in all of diabetes - nighttime glucose control for Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes insulin users who manage their days well and have made a considered choice to stay on pens. They don't need saving. They need protection while they sleep.

Our founders have lived this problem — as people with diabetes and as parents of children with diabetes — and built some of the most recognized products in the space. Now we are building the answer to a question the industry left unanswered: what do pen users need at night that no one has built yet. Sleep-Only Automation™ is it. Nights Protected. Days Yours™.

The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Data Scientist to join our team, reporting to the Director of Data Science. You’ll serve as a technical lead and individual contributor.

This role’s primary focus is incorporating and understanding internally and externally generated data, presenting and communicating these findings to management and different departments, and creating feedback loops between data (ours and third-party) and our products and processes. This includes device-generated data, clinical data analysis, customer metrics, health economic outcomes, and visualization tools.

This role demands a creative tinkerer and a good storyteller who seeks to understand the “why” behind phenomena, balancing theoretical depth with practical application. We’re looking for someone who is intellectually curious, thrives in a fast-paced startup environment, balances speed with rigor, and brings a strong ability to ask easy and hard questions, learn quickly, solve problems creatively, and manage competing priorities.

This is an on-site preferred role, with preference for candidates living within a reasonable commuting distance of the Luna Health office in San Diego, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to identify data-centric problems and align solutions with scientific and operational objectives.
  • Analyze and model internal and external datasets (e.g., clinical trials, product performance, operations, third-party devices) to uncover actionable insights that can be fed back into products and processes.
  • Create and manage visualization tools and dashboards to communicate complex insights clearly.
  • Support the team in design and implementation of internal and external data products.
  • Explore and experiment with novel computational methods, tinkering creatively and iteratively to solve complex problems while keeping practical needs in focus.
  • Create models using Luna data, along with external data, to demonstrate health economic outcomes
  • Provide subject matter expertise in data science, including statistics, modeling, simulation, and AI.

What You Bring

  • 5+ years in data science, computational biology, or related fields, with a proven track record of independently delivering innovative, high-impact projects in modeling, analytics, and systems design.
  • Expertise in data communication and storytelling, with the ability to uncover insights, visualize information, and create a compelling narrative from data. Experience managing tools that make data accessible and digestible for users across the business.
  • Proficiency in Python (e.g., NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn) or R for modeling, simulation, analytics, and visualization, with a focus on clear analysis and communication.. Comfort with AI tool chains, both when and how to apply them.
  • Hands-on experience with clinical data analysis and field metrics.
  • Proficiency with complex numerical methods as well as emerging machine learning technologies.
  • Creative tinkerer with a passion for experimentation, unafraid to dive deep into problems and prototype novel solutions.
  • Ability to balance quick-and-dirty experimentation with rigorous design and analysis.
  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in data science, computational biology, applied mathematics, engineering, or a related field preferred; or equivalent experience demonstrating exceptional technical depth and problem-solving ability. Candidates should show a strong aptitude for rigorous, analytical thinking and hands-on innovation, regardless of formal education.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in medical devices, regulated industries, healthcare, diabetes, or consumer health products
  • Familiarity with FDA regulatory requirements and quality management systems
