Senior Designer
Job Summary
The ideal candidate will be a senior-level individual contributor who owns all visual output across Bill of Rights Institute (BRI). This key individual will have broad design scope across the organization; digital is primary but print remains important. You will be an important contributor to a small team where you will work across marketing, communications, development, content, and program teams to produce cohesive, high-quality visual design.
Core Responsibilities
· Own all visual design for the organization, including digital assets, long-form collateral, and brand expression.
· Design digital assets: banner ads, social graphics, email visuals, website and landing page layouts (WordPress-based).
· Produce long-form and print collateral: annual reports, white papers, brochures, pocket constitutions, and event materials.
· Collaborate on a brand refresh, partnering with external agencies or contractors; act as the internal owner who implements, operationalizes, and maintains the new system.
· Develop and maintain brand guidelines, templates, and design libraries to ensure consistency across all teams.
· Create scalable design systems and processes for repeatable, high-volume output while preserving strategic thinking time.
· Provide visual guidance and art direction to internal teams and external vendors as needed.
· Work cross-functionally with Development, Curriculum, Learning Initiatives, Civics Innovation Lab, and program teams to translate diverse needs into cohesive design solutions.
· Manage multiple concurrent projects and deadlines in a high-output environment.
Skills & Experience
· 6–10+ years of professional design experience (agency, in-house, nonprofit, education, and advertising backgrounds all relevant).
· Strong portfolio demonstrating digital-first design, layout mastery, typography, brand systems, and cross-channel consistency.
· Experience designing across a wide range of formats — small digital units to comprehensive reports.
· Solid working knowledge of print production.
· Familiarity with UX/UI concepts; deeper UX skills welcome but not required.
· Experience collaborating on or leading brand identity work; ability to partner effectively with outside agencies.
· Demonstrated experience informally mentoring or leading creative contributors; openness to future people management responsibilities.
· Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
· Strong organizational habits and the ability to thrive in a high-volume, multi-stakeholder environment.
Tools & Technical
· Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
· Figma or similar for digital layouts and systems.
· Familiarity with WordPress (headless) environments; ability to design for web constraints and handoff.
· Experience with email design tools (ideally HubSpot) a plus.
· Video or motion design skills a nice to have, not required.
Attributes & Culture Fit
· Strategic yet hands-on designer who can balance high-volume production with thoughtful systems-building.
· Highly collaborative, approachable, and able to work productively with educators, program staff, developers, and senior leaders.
· Comfortable working with ambiguity and helping shape new processes.
· Mission-aligned and energized by civic and constitutional education.
Location
· This is a hybrid position with the expectation of being in the Arlington office at least 2-3 days per week.
