WHO WE ARE
Height of Land Publications produces four magazines rooted in outdoor culture: Backcountry, Alpinist, Mountain Flyer, and Cross Country Skier. We are a small, focused team based in Jeffersonville, Vermont, and we care deeply about the stories we tell and the way they look on the page, on screen, and everywhere in between.
THE ROLE
We are looking for a Senior Designer who can own the visual quality and creative direction of everything we publish. This is not a production-only position. You will shape how our brands look and feel across print, digital, and marketing, working alongside our editorial team from concept through final output.
The right person brings a strong point of view, works independently, and is equally comfortable building a 100-page magazine and a single Instagram graphic. You will touch every brand, every issue, and every channel. If you thrive on variety, tight deadlines, and creative problem-solving, this is a role where your work will be visible and your voice will matter.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Design, and produce four distinct magazine titles from concept through press-ready files, collaborating with editors, writers, and photographers at every stage.
- Contribute and lead photo editing, selection, and visual direction for editorial and marketing content across print and digital.
- Maintain and evolve the visual identity and brand standards for each title and the parent company, ensuring consistency and quality across all touchpoints.
- Develop visual storytelling approaches for features, covers, and special projects, bringing a creative perspective to how we present content.
- Create graphics and visual assets for web, email, social media, event materials, and advertising.
- Manage the full prepress workflow: proofing, preflighting, color management, and file delivery to our print partners.
- Contribute ideas and creative solutions for how we present stories across platforms, with an eye toward emerging formats and tools.
- Balance multiple concurrent production schedules, managing your own time effectively across brands and deadlines.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Essential:
- A strong portfolio demonstrating 5+ years of experience in print design, with an emphasis on editorial or magazine work.
- Deep knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop, and a comfort level with the full Adobe Creative Suite.
- Proven ability to manage photo workflows: editing, color correction, retouching, compositing, and output preparation for print.
- A sharp eye for typography, layout, color, and photography.
- Experience working independently, making creative decisions with confidence, and articulating the thinking behind them.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple brands and deadlines simultaneously.
- Clear, direct communication and a collaborative working style with editors, photographers, writers, and external partners.
- Comfortable in a Mac-based environment with experience in font management and file organization.
- Experience designing for digital, social media and marketing purposes.
Preferred:
- Experience with Lightroom and digital asset management at scale.
- Experience working in remote file management.
- Familiarity with web design, email, or digital publishing tools.
- Knowledge of outdoor or studio photography, or a background working with photographers in the field.
- A connection to the outdoor sports and culture that drive our content.
DETAILS
- Location: Hybrid position based in Jeffersonville, VT, with 2–3 days per week on-site. Fully remote considered for the right candidate.
- Schedule: Full-time.
- Compensation: Competitive and commensurate with experience.
