Job Summary
Senior Director of Finance serves as a key strategic and operational leader responsible for the financial oversight of large, complex nonprofit organizations with multiple business lines, funding streams, and program divisions. This role oversees enterprise-wide accounting operations, financial reporting, grant compliance, budgeting, audits, and internal controls while supporting organizational growth, sustainability, and mission impact.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative and mission-driven finance executive with nonprofit financial management experience, strong leadership capabilities, and expertise managing diversified revenue models including government contracts, grants, fee-for-service programs, Cash Flow Forecasting and philanthropic funding.
This position partners closely with executive leadership, operational directors, and the Board of Directors to ensure financial integrity, regulatory compliance, and long-term fiscal health across all organizational entities and service lines.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Financial Leadership
- Provide strategic financial leadership across multiple operating divisions, programs, and client contracts.
- Partner with executive leadership to support organizational planning, growth initiatives, and operational decision-making
- Develop and oversee enterprise-wide financial strategies, forecasts, and long-range planning models
- Monitor organizational financial performance, liquidity, and risk management initiatives
- Support mergers, acquisitions, program expansions, and new business development opportunities where applicable
Financial Operations & Oversight
- Direct all accounting and financial operations including general ledger, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, treasury, and financial reporting
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Oversee consolidated financial reporting across multiple business units/clients and funding sources
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and organizational policies
Budgeting & Financial Planning
- Lead the organization-wide budgeting and forecasting process across all departments and program areas
- Partner with operational leaders to develop and manage departmental and client budgets
- Analyze financial trends, program performance, and cost allocations to support strategic decision-making
- Develop dashboards, KPIs, and financial performance metrics for executive leadership and board reporting
Grants, Contracts & Compliance
- Oversee financial management of government grants, foundation funding, contracts, and restricted funds
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local grant regulations and reporting requirements
- Monitor contract billing, indirect cost allocations, and reimbursement processes
- Collaborate with program leadership to ensure financial accountability across all funding streams
Audit, Risk & Governance
- Lead annual financial audits and coordinate all external audit activities
- Oversee preparation of IRS Form 990 and other required filings
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations, funding requirements, and internal governance standards
- Present financial reports and analysis to executive leadership, finance committees, and the Board of Directors
- Support enterprise risk management and financial compliance initiatives
- Identify process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing finance and accounting team
- Foster collaboration across finance, operations, HR, and program leadership
- Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, continuous improvement, and mission alignment
- Drive process improvements and modernization of financial systems and reporting capabilities
- Supervise finance and accounting staff
- Present financial reports to leadership and finance committees
- Support board meetings with budget and financial analysis
- Foster a culture of fiscal responsibility and continuous improvement

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
- 5+ years of progressive financial leadership experience
- Minimum 5 years of senior-level nonprofit finance/accounting experience
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting, grant compliance, and multi-entity financial management
- Strong understanding of nonprofit fund accounting and restricted funds
- Experience with financial audits, Form 990, and grant compliance
- Experience overseeing large organizational budgets and complex funding structures
- Demonstrated experience managing finance teams in a complex organizational environment
- Advanced knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA, MBA, or related advanced credential preferred, but not required
- Experience within large human services, healthcare, education, behavioral health, transportation, automotive, housing, or community-based nonprofit organizations
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems such as GP Dynamics, Blackbaud, NetSuite, or Microsoft Dynamics
- Experience supporting board finance committees and executive leadership teams

Pay: $90,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
