Sharpe Engineering & Equipment is seeking an experienced Senior Drafter / P&ID Designer to join our Madison-based team of industry experts serving the food, beverage, and dairy industries. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience creating and managing Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), general arrangements, and fabrication drawings that support process and packaging projects from concept through start-up and commissioning.
This role plays a key part in developing accurate, high-quality documentation for sanitary process systems, ensuring alignment between design intent, field conditions, and operational functionality. The Senior Drafter / P&ID Designer will also provide technical leadership, maintain CAD standards, and mentor a small drafting team—all while upholding Sharpe’s reputation for precision, quality, and collaboration.

Responsibilities:
- Lead the creation, modification, and management of AutoCAD P&ID drawings for process and packaging projects.
- Develop and maintain general arrangements, fabrication drawings, and detailed process documentation that meet Sharpe and customer standards.
- Conduct field visits to gather measurements, verify conditions, and translate plant piping and equipment into accurate as-built drawings.
- Collaborate with process, mechanical, and controls engineers to ensure all drawings reflect functional and operational design intent.
- Oversee and mentor a team of up to four drafters, ensuring consistency, quality, and adherence to company drafting standards.
- Maintain and continuously improve drawing libraries, templates, and CAD standards to enhance efficiency and quality.
- Support implementation and integration of AutoCAD Plant 3D and other design tools where applicable.
- Participate in project and client review meetings to represent drafting deliverables and ensure alignment across disciplines.
- Ensure all documentation complies with industry codes, food safety standards, and customer-specific guidelines.
- Travel to client facilities (approximately 30%) for field verification, data collection, and project support.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of drafting and P&ID design experience in process industries, preferably in food, beverage, or sanitary manufacturing.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Prior experience supervising or mentoring junior drafters.
- Expert proficiency in AutoCAD P&ID; working knowledge of AutoCAD Plant 3D preferred.
- Experience with SolidWorks or Revit is a plus.
- Strong understanding of process equipment, piping layouts, valves, and instrumentation.
- Demonstrated ability to take field measurements and produce accurate design deliverables.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across engineering and project management teams.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license; ability to travel domestically and internationally if required.
