Senior Editor/Writer, Be Healthy

MARIA SHRIVER'S SUNDAY PAPER

Senior Editor/Writer, Be Healthy

NOW HIRING | FREELANCE | LOS ANGELES PREFERRED | REMOTE CONSIDERED

---

We're looking for a journalist who can make people think differently about their health.

Be Healthy is a newsletter that's part of Maria Shriver's Sunday Paper, which runs stories about women's health, men's health, brain health, psychology, longevity, and the science of living well. We're hiring a senior editor/writer who can own this twice-monthly product — someone who can ideate, write, and edit award-winning content. Our goal is to provide content worthy of every reader and paying community member who chooses to go deeper as a supporter of the journalism we produce on a regular basis.

---

ABOUT THE ROLE

Be Healthy is not just another health newsletter. It takes a holistic, cross-generational view of health and radically reforms how health information is presented, sourced, and understood. The newsletter is award-winning, and the goal is to make it even more so. We want it to become the go-to publication for trusted health information across every stage of life — a resource that changes how people think about their own health and the health of those they love.

Be Healthy currently publishes every other Tuesday and reaches Maria Shriver's Sunday Paper's full subscriber list, but the complete content is a benefit reserved for members of our paying community. That distinction matters enormously to us. This newsletter is not a roundup of the same five health headlines you'll find everywhere else. It is original, well-reported, thoughtful journalism that earns a reader's loyalty and gives them a genuine reason to invest in and support the journalism we do. (We are also exploring increasing cadence down the road, so someone who can scale with us is a plus.)

This is a single role — senior editor/writer — and that dual identity is intentional. The person we hire will be the creative and editorial engine behind Be Healthy. On average, each issue includes two original pieces, either written by this person or submitted by contributing writers and experts, with this person responsible for the editing and writing of headlines, deks, CTAs, and related copy as needed. Beyond writing and editing, this person will manage each issue from idea to inbox: pitching lineups to senior leadership, coordinating approvals, and working with our production support team to get everything built and out the door on time.

This is not a content mill position. This is journalism. And we hold it to that standard.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

- Write and edit original reported pieces for Be Healthy, covering women's health, men's health, brain health, psychology, longevity, aging, and related science — with the kind of depth and originality that distinguishes subscriber-only content from anything freely available.

- Pitch story ideas and issue lineups to senior leadership for approval, planning ahead to give yourself room to report and write well while staying nimble when news shifts the priorities.

- Edit contributed pieces from freelance writers, authors, and subject matter experts, bringing our editorial voice and standards to every word before it goes out.

- Coordinate with our production support team to ensure each issue is complete, accurate, and ready to send on schedule.

- Participate in our editorial brainstorming sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays, contributing ideas across Maria Shriver's Sunday Paper's full suite of newsletters and editorial products.

- Craft headlines and deks for A/B testing, providing at least two distinct options for each story in order to land on the most compelling option. This position requires the ability to develop and workshop headlines and deks with the senior team as part of our editorial process.

- Occasionally contribute content to other newsletters within Maria Shriver's Sunday Paper family and be willing to lend a hand with copy editing and other small editorial tasks as they come up, working alongside senior editors and under the direction of our editor-in-chief.

- Respond to pitches from book publicists and freelance writers, staying on top of upcoming health titles, cultivating key relationships, and identifying opportunities for excerpts and interviews.

- Bring a collaborative, team-first attitude to every interaction. This is a newsroom built on trust, creativity, and shared purpose.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

We want someone who has done the real work of journalism — a writer/editor who has reported stories, conducted substantive interviews, and knows how to source and fact-check a piece before it goes live. We are looking for a minimum of eight years of professional journalistic experience, with a track record of reported work that demonstrates range, rigor, and a distinctive voice.

- Eight or more years of journalism experience, with a strong portfolio of reported stories and interviews — not just aggregation or SEO content.

- Deep knowledge of and genuine curiosity about the health, wellness, medical, science, and aging landscape, with established contacts in those fields you can reach out to on a deadline.

- A thorough understanding of fact-checking, sourcing, and editorial standards — and the ability to demonstrate that process in your work.

- Experience editing other writers' work, with an instinct for what makes a story land and what needs to be reworked.

- The ability to plan ahead and work independently, while staying flexible when news requires a pivot.

- Strong collaborative instincts — someone who pitches in, communicates clearly, and makes the team stronger.

- Two current professional references who can speak to your journalism, editorial judgment, and character.

- A level of professional credibility commensurate with our senior leadership team, which has deep roots in major national media.
