Job Summary
The Senior Electrical Design Engineer is part of a project team, contributing to the successful and on-time completion of electrical control system upgrade and integration projects. They are responsible for the successful execution of all tasks related to a project’s electrical designs and contribute to improving the design team’s performance. They work closely with project engineers, controls engineers, their design peers, and various support roles. They serve as mentors to their peers yet are not anticipated to have any direct reports.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Design and develop electrical schematics, panel layouts, and network diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical.
- Prepare detailed documentation including BOMs, system tags, and wire label charts.
- Develop tools in AutoCAD Electrical to improve standardization, accuracy, and efficiency.
- Create and maintain AutoLISP routines to automate repetitive tasks and enhance design efficiency.
- Maintain and improve CAD libraries, templates, and standards.
- Deploy developed tools and train Electrical Design Engineer peers on their use.
- Maintain and improve CAD libraries, templates, and standards.
- Review and validate designs for compliance with industry standards and project specifications.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Computer Drafting and Design, Electrical Engineering, or similar technical program.
- 5+ years of experience in electrical design, preferably as a vendor designing for a customer’s system.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical.
- Working proficiency developing and maintaining AutoLISP scripts.
- Strong understanding of electrical standards (e.g., NEC, IEC).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PLCs, control systems, and industrial automation.
- Familiarity with other CAD tools (e.g., EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical).
- Experience with ERP systems and engineering change processes.
Work Environment
This position operates in an office and job site setting. It routinely requires using standard office equipment, such as computer, phones, copiers, fax machines etc. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday 7:30am to 4:30pm, but are project work dependent. Occasional evenings and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Travel is required. Start-ups or job site setting hours will vary based on project and location. Field hours can vary from 10 to 20 hours per day in addition for the need to work weekends and 7 or more days in a row depending on specific start-up schedules on projects and customer demands, which can vary. Customer interaction is required. Frequently, startup situations become very stressful under deadlines to meet a customer’s schedule or to overcome a situation where our customer may not be satisfied with progress or performance that is out of our control. Engineers are expected to handle these situations in a calm and helpful manner.
Physical Demands
Performance of the required duties will require physical ability to occasionally climb permanent and temporary stairs, climb ladders, negotiate work areas under construction, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally requires use of construction personnel hoists. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Performing this job regularly requires use of hands to finger, handle or feel objects in pocket, tools, or controls, sit, talk, hear, stand. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy weight. Employee must be capable of using tools, and able to help install equipment and make adjustments/modifications to that equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works on-site at the construction worksite where the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise in this work environment can be moderate to very loud.
