Senior Fellow, Product Strategy & AI Innovation

We’re entering an exciting new chapter — One Degree 3.0 — and seeking a Senior Fellow to help us reimagine our product and technology in a time of transformation. This part-time fellowship is ideal for a seasoned technologist with deep experience in product strategy, engineering, and AI, who wants to apply their talents for public good. You may have led product or engineering teams at a top tech company, and now you’re looking to give back by contributing to a nonprofit that has helped millions of families across the U.S. You’ll join as a thought partner, coach, and technical contributor, helping One Degree clarify its product vision, make smart tradeoffs, explore AI opportunities, and align its roadmap with the organization’s broader strategic and impact goals. This is a hands-on role: you’ll roll up your sleeves and work closely with our product and engineering teams to tackle some of our most exciting challenges.

One-Year Fellowship
$50,000 Honorarium · ~15–20 hrs/month
(Fellowship made possible with support from Google.org, with option to extend for an additional year)

What You’ll Do

Core Opportunities Ahead

You’ll work directly with the Product & Engineering team to identify critical needs and roll up your sleeves on some of the most exciting and impactful technical challenges on our roadmap. These projects reflect the bold direction we’re heading in as we reimagine our platform to meet the needs of communities and partners in a new AI-powered era:
  • AI Infrastructure for the Social Safety Net
  • Federation Architecture
  • Microservices & APIs
  • Interoperability
  • AI-Driven Stack Enhancements

Product Vision & Roadmap

  • Partner with the CEO and Director of Product to develop a clear product roadmap that articulates priorities, tradeoffs, dependencies, and impact
  • Partner with the CEO and Director of Product to craft a bold and compelling product vision that aligns with One Degree’s 3-year strategic plan
  • Connecting product work to One Degree’s impact destination
  • Help the team define and align around clear impact metrics that are embedded into product strategy and platform development
  • Strengthen our ability to make tough prioritization decisions by aligning features and investments with long-term community impact

Coaching & Mentorship

  • Serve as a sounding board and mentor for our talented team as we navigate emerging product and engineering opportunities
  • Support our Director of Product in owning and delivering the roadmap
  • Partner with the CEO to prepare for board discussions, funder meetings, and major proposals where product vision and tech roadmap are central.
  • Support engineering leadership with architectural input related to roadmap feasibility (e.g., FHIR interoperability, AI, multi-tenancy).

Strategic Advisor to the CEO

  • Serve as a sounding board on product strategy and key technology decisions
  • Participate in select board and leadership meetings to provide perspective on technical and product direction
  • Collaborate on product-related sections of our organizational strategic plan

Technical Guidance

  • Provide high-level guidance on system architecture, data infrastructure, and emerging technology risks
  • Identify technical vulnerabilities and opportunities, particularly as we scale or partner across ecosystems


What This Role Is Not

  • This is not a management role or a substitute for current product or engineering leadership.


Ideal Profile

  • Former VP or C-level tech leader (VP, CPO, CTO)
  • 10+ years experience in product strategy, systems architecture, or technical leadership roles
  • Skilled at translating concrete product roadmaps and phased priorities into big-picture vision
  • Strong mentorship mindset and ability to support without taking over
  • Comfort with async, flexible, lightly structured work
  • Bonus: experience with healthcare systems, AI/ML, interoperability (e.g., FHIR), or public digital infrastructure


Logistics

  • Commitment: ~15-20 hours/month (flexible)
  • Duration: 12-month fellowship (with option to extend)
  • Location: Remote (U.S.-based preferred for time zone overlap)
  • Honorarium: $50,000
