General Statement of DutiesPerforms responsible fire suppression and incident response activities including operating fire apparatus and participating in firefighting.Distinguishing Features of the ClassAn employee in this class participates in the operations of fire suppression, fire education and prevention, technical rescue, emergency medical, and other incident response operations at the fire station. Employees are assigned to a 48-hour shift rotation (48/96 schedule) in accordance with the Town of Nashville Fire Department’s established shift schedule. Work requires the employee to stay abreast of state-of-the-art fire suppression and rescue procedures, techniques, and equipment and to incorporate the necessary changes into in-service training. The employee is subject to the hazards associated with hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, respirator wearing, and working in close quarters. The employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood-borne pathogens.When necessary, the Master Firefighter drives and operates a fire vehicle at the fire scene, fights fires, and prepares the fire vehicle, lines, and equipment for use by other
firefighters.Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work completed.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Participates in incidence response, including firefighting operations, operation of fire apparatus, and other equipment as required; responds and participates in remediation activities of chemical spills, hazardous materials, and other related incidents; responds to emergency medical incidents and provides Emergency Medical Technician services; responds to technical rescue calls operating various equipment.Responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents; provides appropriate services, including emergency rescue and fire suppression; performs search and rescue for trapped or injured persons; performs emergency medical and first aid services as needed; prepares reports regarding emergency incidents as assigned.When needed, drives apparatus to the incident scene; properly places apparatus to establish water supply or other needs; ensures proper operation and pressure of hoses; issues equipment and monitors radio traffic for necessary response; returns fire apparatus and related equipment to service after incident response. Inspects station and equipment for proper appearance and condition; maintains equipment and restocks supplies as needed. Participates in cleaning and maintaining facilities, grounds, equipment, and apparatus; ensures that appropriate conditions are maintained at the fire station; ensures that all equipment and apparatus are in a constant state of readiness for emergency calls.Assists with preparing fire reports; participates in special projects as required; participates in training, fire pre-planning, fire inspections, fire education and prevention programming, maintenance and testing of hoses, pumpers, and hydrants, and other related activities.Participates in training on shift and when required on other occasions.Performs other related duties as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Must meet and maintain vehicle insurability with the Town of Nashville.Must be able to wear proper safety equipment as determined by the Fire Chief in accordance with established OSHA regulations.Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B driver’s license.Possession of North Carolina Firefighter I & II certification upon appointment.Possession of North Carolina Hazardous Materials Operations certification upon appointment.Possession of North Carolina EMT-Basic certification upon appointment.Possession of North Carolina Driver/Operator certification upon appointment.Possession of North Carolina Emergency Vehicle Driver (EVD) certification upon appointment.Ability to obtain Child Passenger Safety Technician (Car Seat Technician) certification within 18 months of appointment.Ability to obtain Trench/Confined Space and Structural Collapse certifications within 36 months of appointment.
