Senior FPGA Engineer

Overview

We’re looking for an experienced FPGA Engineer to take ownership of a real‑time feedback control algorithm implemented on Xilinx FPGAs using Verilog. This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of digital design, verification, and embedded systems. You’ll maintain and extend our existing control logic, improve performance, and collaborate closely with firmware and systems engineers.

If you enjoy working across the full stack, from HDL to Python-based verification to embedded RTOS integration, you’ll feel right at home.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own, maintain, and enhance an existing feedback control algorithm implemented in Verilog on Xilinx FPGA platforms.
  • Develop new FPGA modules, optimize timing, and ensure robust real‑time behavior.
  • Build and maintain simulation and verification environments using:
  • Icarus Verilog
  • cocotb
  • Python-based test frameworks
  • Integrate FPGA logic with embedded systems, including STM32 microcontrollers running RTOS (FreeRTOS or similar).
  • Collaborate with firmware engineers to define interfaces, timing requirements, and system-level behavior.
  • Use Git, Pixi, and modern DevOps workflows to maintain clean, reproducible development environments.
  • Document architecture, design decisions, and verification results.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on FPGA design experience (Xilinx preferred).
  • Strong proficiency in Verilog (SystemVerilog a plus).
  • Demonstrated experience with feedback control, real‑time digital signal processing, or similar closed-loop systems.
  • Fluency in Python for tooling, scripting, and verification.
  • Experience with Icarus Verilog, cocotb, and simulation-driven development.
  • Strong understanding of Git-based workflows and reproducible build environments (Pixi, Conda, or similar).
  • Familiarity with embedded systems and microcontroller interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, DMA, timers, interrupts).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with STM32 microcontrollers and RTOS environments (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar).
  • Background in control theory, DSP, or real-time systems.
  • Experience with C/C++ firmware development.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines for hardware verification.
  • Comfort with cross-functional collaboration in fast-paced R&D environments.
  • Experience developing and documenting FPGA designs and embedded software in a regulated environment — ideally medical, but automotive or aerospace is also highly relevant.

What Makes This Role Unique

  • You’ll own a mission-critical control algorithm end-to-end.
  • You’ll work across FPGA, verification, and embedded firmware — not siloed into one domain.
  • You’ll contribute directly to technology that can help surgeons remove cancer more effectively, improving patient outcomes in a deeply meaningful way.

Pay: $135,000.00 - $160,000.00 per year
