Company Overview:
Allen Control Systems (ACS) is a cutting-edge defense startup, founded by two ex-Navy electrical engineers with a proven track record in robotics and software. We are developing a small, autonomous gun turret that employs advanced computer vision and control systems to precisely target and neutralize small drones and loitering munitions. Our innovative approach requires overcoming significant technical challenges, making this an exciting and dynamic environment for experienced engineers.
With an engineering-first culture, ACS values technical excellence and innovation. Backed by our founders' successful exits from two previous ventures acquired for a combined $180M in 2022, we are committed to ensuring that the groundbreaking technologies we develop will have a real-world impact.
Position Overview:
As the Senior Industrial Designer, your primary mission is to define the physical identity and functional ergonomics of our autonomous defense systems. You will bridge the gap between advanced robotics engineering and world-class product design, ensuring our turrets are not only highly effective but also professional, ruggedized, and intuitive. This role requires a visionary designer who can navigate the complexities of thermal management, weatherproofing, and field-serviceability while maintaining a cohesive and modern design language.
What You'll Do:
Product Identity: Develop and maintain a distinct visual design language for ACS hardware that conveys reliability, precision, and advanced technology.
Design Integration: Work side-by-side with Mechanical and Electrical Engineering to create enclosures that accommodate complex sensors, optics, and high-torque motors.
CMF Leadership: Define and document Color, Material, and Finish (CMF) specifications suitable for extreme military and industrial environments.
Prototyping: Build high-fidelity physical prototypes using 3D printing, CNC machining, and traditional shop tools to validate form, fit, and user interaction.
Visual Communication: Produce high-quality renders and design presentations to communicate intent to internal stakeholders and external partners.
Manufacturing Liaison: Collaborate with vendors and CMs to ensure design intent is maintained through the tooling and production phases.
What You'll Need:
Education: BS/BA in Industrial Design or a related field.
Relevant Experience: 5+ years of experience designing complex electromechanical products, preferably in robotics, aerospace, or automotive.
Technical Competence: Mastery of CAD software (SolidWorks, Rhino, or Fusion 360) and rendering tools (Keyshot or similar).
Portfolio: A strong portfolio demonstrating a range of projects from initial sketching and ideation to final production-ready designs.
Adaptability: Comfort working in a fast-paced startup environment where technical challenges are frequent and dynamic.
What we Offer:
Competitive salary
ACS Equity Package
Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance
Paid Time Off
