Senior Manager, Data & Generative AI

The Senior Manager, Data & Generative AI leads Simpson Thacher & Bartlett’s enterprise Data Modernization strategy, advancing the firm’s ability to leverage Artificial Intelligence to enrich data for analytics, reporting, and decision intelligence. This role is responsible for operationalizing modern data architecture, including the Medallion architecture implementation within the Databricks platform. The Senior Manager enables a cohesive Business Intelligence ecosystem that supports informed decision-making across legal, compliance, and business operations.

The role partners closely with IT, Security, Knowledge Management, Information Governance, and external stakeholders to ensure regulatory compliance and successful AI-driven solution delivery within a highly regulated legal environment. The Senior Manager, Data & Generative AI is versed in the concept of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to scale and deploy infrastructure across various environments. The Senior Manager works in ‘lock step’ with the Associate Director, Orchestration & Automation, to drive alignment on key decisions, timelines, and strategic priorities.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead implementation of Medallion architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold layers).

  • Oversee lifecycle management of enterprise data platforms.

  • Advance the firm’s Data Modernization capabilities.

  • Operationalize scalable data ingestion transformation, governance and reporting frameworks.

  • Operations Management (including incident, problem, and change monitoring)

  • Promote a culture of accountability and transparency with clear line of sight to goals

  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and service excellence

  • Demonstrate ability to manage timeframes involving multiple functions

  • Think critically and make quick decisions to address Firm challenges effectively

  • Translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences

  • Demonstrate flexibility and agility in adapting to changing needs and priorities

  • Facilitate solutions for Microsoft tools like Azure OpenAI Service, Microsoft Purview, SharePoint Syntex, and Copilot into legal workflows

  • Collaborate with IT to ensure robust architecture, data governance, and security for Azure-based AI solutions

  • Ensure alignment between AI initiatives and enterprise cloud strategy, data privacy regulations, and legal risk frameworks.

Education

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, business or a related field or complimentary equivalent work experience

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in computer science, information technology, business or a related field or complimentary equivalent work experience

Skills and Experience

Required

  • 5-7 Years leading engineering teams, data teams, or development teams

  • Experience implementing machine learning initiatives within legal, compliance, or highly regulated environments

  • Understanding of Microsoft Azure services and Microsoft Purview

  • Knowledge of data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2) and legal risk considerations.

  • Experience implementing machine learning initiatives in regulated environments.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities

  • Comfort with ambiguity; ability to work with incomplete data or seemingly open-ended questions and translate into actionable analysis

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills (written and verbal)

  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills

Salary Information

NY Only: The estimated base salary range for this position is $200,000 to $250,000 at the time of posting.

The actual salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. This role is exempt meaning it is not overtime pay eligible.
