Position Summary
The Senior Mold Designer, under minimal supervision of the Design Manager, is primarily responsible for the quality, accuracy, and cost effectiveness of designs developed at or below quoted timelines. The Senior Mold Designer is the pivotal point of communication during the entire design process, interfacing directly with customers, shop team members, and vendors to ensure that designs comply with CDM’s design-for-manufacturability standards while meeting the needs of the customer.
The Senior Mold Designer must be creative, innovative, analytical thinking with strong attention to detail, adaptable, dependable, trustworthy and accountable.
What will your day look like?
As a member of the Design team, you will work approximately 40-50 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with a typical start time between 6:00AM and 7:30AM. Some weeks may require more or less hours depending on customer deadlines.
During your work hours, you will:
- Responsible for your safety and designing molds that can be manufactured and used safely by CDM and its customers.
- Be responsible for the development of conceptual, preliminary, and final plastic injection mold designs using CAD software, modeling in 3D solid model geometry, in an organized assembly structure.
- Use design best practices and CDM’s design-for-manufacturability design standards to construct and document CAD models that meet tooling performance objectives and assist with manufacturing processes.
- Mentor and guide junior designers in all aspects of mold design.
- Interface directly with team members to resolve any product or mold design-related issues.
- Collaborate with vendors for specialized services and components as required for assigned design projects.
- Interface with customers to obtain necessary design approvals at required stages.
- Create 3D assembly mold designs.
- Create detailed drawings as needed.
- Understand the entire scope of the project.
- Integrate the KISS principle.
- Communicate any roadblocks with Design Manager.
- Lead all design meetings taking accurate notes and execute all changes discussed.
- Create DFM PowerPoint.
- Responsible for completing all design checklists and correcting all errors.
- Responsible for accurate Design, VAS and BOM
- Use design best practices and CDM’s design-for-manufacturability design standards to construct and document CAD models that meet tooling performance objectives and assist with manufacturing processes.
- Mentor and guide junior designers and interns in all aspects of mold design.
- Interface directly with team members to resolve any product or mold design-related issues.

- You have at least eight (8) years of experience designing plastic injection molds and are proficient in leading all phases of plastic injection mold development, with demonstrated ability to develop new molds and to complete engineering changes.
- You have proficient computer skills, with particular competency in Microsoft Office and Siemens NX (or other CAD software of your choice as long as you are an expert with that software and can be self-sufficient in using it).
- You are analytical and have a mechanical aptitude with the detail-oriented abilities and skills necessary to determine design tolerances, to find and eliminate design flaws, and to determine the strength of materials and appropriate manufacturing processes.
- You have multi-tasking and organizational abilities and skills to simultaneously manage multiple aspects of one or more custom projects.
- You have the interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to successfully complete projects in collaboration with customers, vendors, designers, project managers, machinists, and toolmakers.

- Work Location: on-site, hybrid, or remote if you are not living in Wisconsin.

- If you are a remote employee, you will complete onboarding on-site in Hartford, WI and will be expected to visit approximately one (1) week per quarter.
