Job Summary:
The Post-Operative Staff Nurse is responsible for providing immediate and ongoing nursing care to patients recovering from surgery. The nurse monitors vital signs, manages pain, ensures patient safety, and supports recovery while adhering to hospital protocols and NABH standards.
Key Responsibilities:1. Patient Monitoring & Care
- Monitor vital signs (BP, Pulse, Respiration, SpO2, Temperature) as per protocol.
- Assess level of consciousness and recovery from anesthesia.
- Observe for post-operative complications such as bleeding, respiratory distress, shock, nausea, and pain.
- Maintain airway patency and provide oxygen therapy when required.
- Manage IV lines, drains, catheters, and surgical dressings.
2. Medication Administration
- Administer prescribed medications (IV, IM, oral, epidural, etc.) as per doctor’s order.
- Ensure correct dosage, route, and timing.
- Monitor and document drug reactions.
3. Pain Management
- Assess pain using standardized pain scale.
- Administer analgesics as prescribed.
- Reassess and document pain relief effectiveness.
4. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate nursing records and post-op charts.
- Document intake-output, medication administration, and clinical observations.
- Report abnormal findings immediately to the duty doctor / consultant.
5. Infection Control
- Follow strict aseptic techniques.
- Adhere to hospital infection control protocols.
- Ensure proper disposal of biomedical waste.
6. Patient & Attender Education
- Educate patient/family about post-op care instructions.
- Provide discharge instructions as per protocol.
7. Emergency Management
- Identify early signs of complications.
- Assist in emergency resuscitation (CPR / Code Blue).
- Maintain readiness of emergency equipment.
8. Coordination
- Coordinate with surgeons, anesthetists, ICU, and ward nurses for smooth patient transfer.
- Ensure proper handover during shift change.
Qualification:
- GNM / B.Sc Nursing (Mandatory)
- Valid State Nursing Council Registration
Experience:
- 1–3 years of experience in Post-Operative Care / ICU / OT Recovery Room
- Freshers with strong clinical exposure may be considered.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Strong clinical assessment skills
- Knowledge of anesthesia recovery protocols
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Mandatory)
- ACLS preferred
- Good communication & documentation skills
- Ability to handle emergency situations calmly
