Senior Tableau Developer
About Bright Star
Bright Star is a forward-thinking technology consultancy that specializes in harnessing the power of data and AI to solve complex business challenges. Our team of experts combines deep technical expertise with strategic insight to deliver innovative solutions that drive meaningful impact for our clients.
Role Description
Bright Star is recruiting a Senior Tableau Developer to support our Department of State client. This position is full-time and is hybrid. This role will work directly with a Bureau Chief Data Officer at the State Department to support national security, operations, and US overseas mission readiness through advanced data analytics and data visualization. The client is passionate about Tableau, has Tableau development skills, understands the strengths and limitations of Tableau, and is a true partner, not just a dashboard consumer. The role transforms complex, mission-driven datasets into actionable insights for decision makers and stakeholders across the Department, Embassy/Consulate environments, and interagency partners like US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
As a Senior Tableau Developer, you will be responsible for building and delivering advanced data-driven visualization solutions. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to take initiatives independently and collaboratively with other team members. This role requires talking to clients to understand problems, development of data-driven stories to aid decision-making, and design of simple and beautiful dashboards or reports that are effective at glance but allow a deep dive into the data. You will tackle complex use cases with strong architectural approaches, practice a modern visual design essence, and take feedback from stakeholders to deliver scalable, accurate, and insightful analytics product. You will collaborate with our other Tableau developers and use established design guidance, but you will primarily develop dashboards and reports independently while working with data engineers.
Key Responsibilities
● Develop relationships with stakeholders to understand their needs and iterate on use cases and data products to meet mission needs.
● Design, develop, and maintain advanced Tableau dashboards, data stories, and visual analytics aligned with federal reporting needs.
● Implement complex calculations (LODs, table calculations, parameters, filters, IF-Statements, throughputs etc.) and optimize data models to support performance, scalability, and security.
● Conduct industry best practices and apply a series of data analytics methodologies, including descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics.
● Build intuitive and accessible UI/UX, and storytelling visualizations tailored to diverse user groups including executives, analysts, and operational staff.
● Integrate Tableau dashboards with enterprise data sources (SQL Server, Databricks, Microsoft Azure, AWS, Snowflake, etc.) in both Tableau Desktop and Server environment.
● Collaborate with data engineers and scientists to design data models, adopt AI/ML output data, optimize data marts for Tableau automation consumption, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and alignment with Department data governance practices.
● Use iterative prototyping, structured feedback sessions, and usability testing to ensure dashboards meet real operational needs, advocating for user-centric design practices.
● Collaborate with Department of State headquarters units to ensure adherence to security controls, data access policies, design standardizations, and compliance and governance frameworks.
Required Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Business Analytics, or related fields.
● 7+ years of professional experience in visualization development, including enterprise-level dashboard design and deployment with Tableau BI Tool.
● Expert proficiency in Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server/Cloud, and/or Tableau Prep.
● Strong understanding in SQL/Relational Data model (complex joins, cardinalities, performance tuning, stored procedures).
● Demonstrated ability to gather requirements, perform analysis, and deliver high-quality visual solutions.
● Demonstrated confidence in analyzing data in descriptive, diagnostic, and statistical ways and able to explain patterns, behaviors and stories.
● Demonstrated experience working with large datasets, operational metrics, and enterprise data warehouses.
● Experience in building human-centered design, accessible, Section 508-compliant visualizations.
● Proven ability to communicate complex data concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
● Familiarity with SDLC, Agile/Scrum, and DevSecOps environments.
● US Citizen and eligible to obtain Security Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
● Active clearance with a secret-level or higher security clearance.
● Has experience with State, USCIS, USAID, or similar agencies.
● Master’s degree and above are plus and may count as additional years of experience.
