Senior Tax Accountant / Tax Manager TrackJob Summary
We are seeking a strong, motivated Senior Tax Accountant who is ready to take the next step in their career and grow into a Tax Manager role. This position is ideal for someone who already has a solid technical tax foundation and wants to move beyond preparation into reviewing work, training staff, improving systems, managing client relationships, and working directly with firm leadership.
The right candidate will be detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable taking ownership of projects. You will help manage tax compliance and planning engagements, review returns, support and train team members, communicate with clients, and assist ownership in developing better processes for a growing firm. This is a leadership-track position for someone who wants to become a key part of the firm’s future, not simply remain in a production-only role.
About the Firm
We are a growing professional services firm serving individuals, business owners, entrepreneurs, and closely held companies. In addition to tax, accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, and advisory services, we have added a wealth management arm, have an insurance division, and plan to add legal services in 2027.
This role is important to the next stage of our growth. We are looking for a senior tax professional who wants to work directly with ownership, help strengthen the tax department, develop staff, improve systems, and grow into a management role.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and review federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, businesses, trusts, estates, and other entities.
- Review work prepared by staff accountants and provide clear, constructive feedback to improve accuracy, efficiency, and technical development.
- Train and mentor junior team members on tax preparation, client communication, workpaper organization, software usage, and firm procedures.
- Manage tax engagements from start to finish, including gathering client information, identifying missing items, reviewing workpapers, resolving issues, and delivering completed returns.
- Communicate directly with clients regarding tax questions, planning opportunities, document requests, notices, deadlines, and engagement status.
- Work closely with ownership to identify bottlenecks, improve workflows, create systems, document procedures, and strengthen the firm’s tax department.
- Assist with tax planning for individuals, businesses, business owners, real estate investors, and other client groups.
- Support more advanced planning areas, including entity structure, estate and trust issues, mergers and acquisitions, business transitions, and ownership-level tax matters.
- Manage IRS and state tax notices, audits, and correspondence by gathering documentation, researching issues, and communicating with clients and agencies.
- Help develop internal standards for review processes, tax workpapers, client onboarding, recurring client service, and quality control.
- Collaborate with bookkeeping, payroll, advisory, insurance, wealth management, and other internal service teams to provide coordinated client service.
- Maintain current knowledge of tax law changes, accounting standards, software tools, and best practices relevant to the firm’s client base.
- Assist ownership with special projects, strategic initiatives, client service improvements, and department-level planning.
Skills and Qualifications
- Significant experience in public accounting, tax preparation, tax review, or closely related tax advisory work.
- Strong technical knowledge of individual, business, and entity taxation.
- Experience reviewing tax returns and identifying technical issues, missing information, planning opportunities, and quality-control concerns.
- Ability and desire to train, mentor, and develop less-experienced staff members.
- Strong client communication skills, including the ability to explain tax issues clearly and professionally.
- Comfortable working directly with firm ownership and taking initiative on process improvements.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple client projects, deadlines, and priorities.
- Proficiency with tax software and accounting platforms such as QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, or similar systems.
- Strong understanding of financial statements, general ledger activity, account reconciliations, and bookkeeping concepts.
- Ability to identify opportunities to improve systems, workflows, templates, checklists, and internal procedures.
- Professional judgment, accountability, and a willingness to take ownership of client relationships and team outcomes.
- Interest in growing into a Tax Manager role with increasing responsibility for review, staff supervision, client management, and departmental leadership.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a senior-level tax professional who is ready for more responsibility. You may already be reviewing returns, answering staff questions, handling client calls, or improving processes informally, and now you are looking for a role where those leadership skills can become a formal part of your career path.
This role is a strong fit for someone who wants to help build a better tax department, not just complete tax returns. We are looking for someone who enjoys solving problems, developing people, creating systems, working with clients, and collaborating with ownership to support the long-term growth of the firm.
Why Join Us
This is an opportunity to grow into a leadership role within a developing and expanding professional services firm. You will have the chance to work directly with decision-makers, influence how the tax department operates, help train the next generation of staff, and become a trusted advisor to clients.
If you are a Senior Tax Accountant who is ready to move toward management, client leadership, and ownership-level collaboration, we would like to hear from you.
