Senior Test Lab Engineer - 2nd Shift (Monday - Friday, 4pm to 12:30am)

Hyosung HICO, Ltd. has an opening for a full-time Sr. Test Lab Engineer – 2nd Shift (M-F 4p-12:30a) in Memphis, TN 38109.

  • Duties are to lead daily testing of power transformers including both low-voltage and high-voltage testing;
  • Ensure ongoing adherence to internal quality and test requirements and any external standards such as customer specifications or IEEE requirements;
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose testing equipment problems as well as transformer test failures;
  • Utilize PC and necessary hand calculations to prepare files and forms for transformer test and draft Certified Test Reports.
  • Prepare detailed test plans for scheduled transformers based on input from the customer specification, test specification, nameplate, control drawings, standards, equipment instruction manuals and work instructions.
  • Interface with engineering and production as necessary for clarifications or to obtain additional information. Represent the test department in a professional manner.
  • Maintain & Repair test equipment as necessary. Ensure equipment is calibrated and schedule upcoming calibrations. Monitor condition of test equipment and test fixtures.
  • Recognize opportunities for improvement and take action. Work to decrease test set-up times and enhance test protocols.
  • Ensure engineering changes are acted upon as required and communicate non-conformances to the quality assurance department.
  • Provide work leadership and train junior engineers and test technicians. Teach equipment setup, connections, principles of operation, maintenance, and diagnostics.
  • Perform assessments and make recommendations for the purchase of additional testing equipment. Manage capital projects for equipment as necessary.
  • Interact with customers and serve as the liaison between the HICO sales group and HICO customers for FAT items and discussions.
  • Prepare failure reports and provide technical expertise to MRB teams to effectively troubleshoot and solve transformer testing issues.
  • Safely operate test equipment, material handling and lifting equipment such as overhead cranes, forklifts, pallet jacks, motorized scissors lifts and work platforms as required to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Promote a culture of process control and quality excellence by providing effective leadership for problem solving, failure investigations, and implementing appropriate countermeasures.
  • Support and assist the Quality Assurance Manager as needed.
  • Support and make recommendations to improve Company policies and procedures.
  • Further the goals and positive, professional image of the Test Department by effective dealings with customers and other internal departments.
  • Know HICO’s Quality, Safety and Environmental Policies. Be able to fully discuss the importance of these policies and their impact in the workplace.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of ongoing business activities which include but are not limited to: the ISO-9001 program, daily and routine manufacturing and QC inspection issues, and lean manufacturing initiatives, internal audits, customer visits or field assessments, testing issues or general QA/QC procedural matters.
  • Assist with on-the-job training in the areas of testing.

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or its foreign educational equivalent in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or related engineering field. Plus 5 years relevant professional experience in transformer testing in heavy industries or utilities are required with experience in Quality Assurance and Manufacturing Department procedures, performing electrical power tests such as the following: ratio tests, polarity and phase relation, resistance, insulation resistance, insulation power-factor, losses excitation, impedance voltage, temperature rise, lightning impulse, switching impulse, applied voltage, induced voltage, discharge, noise, equipment loss, and tap changer testing, in using inspection tools, instruments and equipment and performing test equipment and tool inspections and calibration as required. Up to 10% international or domestic travel to attend training/conferences or for business necessity at unanticipated locations.
