Job Summary
The sexton performs regular custodial services for the following church properties: the main church building including: the Tombaugh Gallery, the library and church staff offices, and the Religious Education building. May provide occasional maintenance services, consistent with ability. Sets up furniture and equipment for events and meetings.
Essential Functions
- Cleans the three church buildings according to a schedule established by the church administrator. Cleaning includes sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping of floors; dusting and wiping down of various surfaces; cleaning windows; taking out trash and recycling, thorough cleaning of bathrooms, shampooing of carpets as needed, and other duties as negotiated with church administrator.
- Provides routine maintenance of church facilities and equipment. Maintenance includes changing of batteries and light bulbs (within reach of a ladder); updating clocks, changing filters, painting, minor repairs, and other duties as negotiated with the church office administrator.
- Replenishes supplies throughout the buildings, such as paper towels and toilet paper. Communicate with the church office administrator regarding needed supplies.
- Notifies the church office administrator of maintenance and repair needs beyond sexton’s abilities.
- Sets up and takes down furniture and equipment for events and meetings, according to the church calendar, or on request of the church office administrator.
- Checks in regularly with church administrator, and collaborates with the Facilities Committee.
- Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of and skill in cleaning procedures and processes, products and equipment.
- Knowledge, or the ability to acquire knowledge of, basic building maintenance.
- Ability to perform basic repairs, and safely use the tools to do so.
- Reasonable physical fitness, with the ability to lift and carry items up to 50 lbs., work from a tall ladder, and kneel, squat, or stand to perform duties.
- Must pass a criminal background check.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
