Sign Maintenance Technician

General Description:

The purpose of this job within the organization is to perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of signs for city buildings, sidewalks/pavements, and transportation systems.

This job works under close supervision according to set procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this job/class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job/class as necessary.

Essential Functions:

Installs and repairs all street signage for city buildings, road markings, and sidewalks/pavements; performs maintenance on roads such as striping, replacing reflectors, painting, sealing, and changing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; inspects all transportation systems.

Performs minor skilled interior building maintenance and repairs such as painting, floor covering, plumbing, lighting, carpentry, mechanical, and other semi-skilled trade work.

Inspects and maintains assigned custodial equipment and small tools for proper operating condition.

Opens and closes up facilities as needed.

Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building maintenance.

Maintains records of completed work.

Additional Duties:

Serves on various employee committees as needed.

On-Call Rotation for weekends and events

Performs related work as assigned.

Mathematical Requirements:

Uses addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and/or calculates ratios, rates and percents.

Communications Requirements:

Reads routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writes routine sentences and completes routine job forms and incident reports; speaks routine sentences using proper grammar.

Judgment Requirements:

Responsible for long range goals, planning and methodologies. Decision-making is focus of the job, affecting entire organization and surrounding population; works in an unstable environment with frequent and significant changes in conditions.

Complexity of Work:

Performs semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules, but with frequent problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

Impact of Errors:

The impact of errors is moderately serious – affects work unit and may affect other units or citizens or loss of life could occur but probability is low.

Physical Demands:

Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Equipment Usage:

Leads or handles machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.

Unavoidable Hazards:

Involves routine and frequent exposureto extreme noise levels; animals/wildlife.

Safety of Others: (Does not include safety of subordinates).

Requires responsibility for the safety and health of others and for occasional enforcement of the laws and standards of public health and safety.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

· Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.

· Requires six months of experience in public sign installation and repair, building maintenance, or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

· Valid State Driver's License with Class B CDL License.

· The ability to possess and maintain Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Intermediate Traffic Certification within six months of employment in position.

· IMSA Sign and Pavement Marking Level I Certification within six months of employment in position.
