This job category typically designs sign layout and lettering from wood, plastic or reflective metal; draws graphic material or lettering for title, backgrounds or other layouts, set up signs

• Design sign layout and lettering from wood, plastic or reflective metal; draw graphic material or lettering for title, backgrounds or other layouts; write specifications for forms design, design layouts of graphic or printed materials, composes mechanicals and implement maintenance procedures and clean tools for work areas.
• Operate lettering equipment and tools, set up sign fabrication equipment, apply detail, background and shading to signs, cut adhesive reflective sheet from roll, cut metal and stencils, apply press type or other transfer lettering materials and operate drill press.
• Consult with outside agencies or individuals about information necessary for job assignments and answer routine questions.
• A requirement of learning how to utilize various types of electronic manual recording and computerized information systems used by the office, agency or related units.

LICENSE:

Applicant will be required to possess a valid New Jersey Only Driver’s license if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

EDUCATION:

• Applicant should have completed a vocational, technical or specialized training program in graphic arts, graphic and printing communications or graphic arts technology and a one (1) year of experience in work involving sign design, layout and lettering or graphic arts.
• Applicant who do not possess the required education may substitute one (1) year of additional experience.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of metal cutting, plastic cutting equipment and layout techniques; lettering techniques and their application, procedures for cleaning tools and the work area.
• Skilled in using drafting instruments, the ability to follow oral and written orders, directions or plans, use of layout equipment and tools, know how to operate a drill press, lettering equipment and tools.
