The primary function of a Carpenter will be involved in many kinds of construction activity. This position will cut, fit and assemble wood, metal and other materials used in the construction of buildings and other structures. Duties will vary depending on the particular phase of each project. The three major phases or types of work include interior framing, outside concrete forms for slabs, and interior detail to get individual units ready for final inspection and move in.
Carpenters skill sets should include:
- Form setter – curb & edge forms, layout work; Moduforms; blueprint reading skills.
- Metal Building Carpenter – layout; framing; flashing details.
- This position requires the desire and ability to work full time (40 hours per week).
REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Required: High School graduate or equivalent combination of experience and education.
Preferred: Secondary school courses in carpentry or building trades
Experience:
Required: At least two years experience in form building or framing.
Preferred: Working toward the completion of the apprenticeship program.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
- Ability to read and understand blueprints drawings, sketches, and building plans.
- Fluent understanding of proper framing techniques.
- Understanding of job layout and setup technique.
- Ability to understand and take direction.
- Ability to cut and shape material to prescribed measurements using hand and power tools.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to have the use of both hands and feet.
- Walking, bending and ability to climb on and around construction structures and negotiate difficult terrain associated with construction sites.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
Mental Requirements:
- Mathematics: Basic math skills including understanding of weights and measures.
- Language: Ability to communicate in English with employees, management, and customers.
- Technical expertise in carpentry skills.
- Possess personal maturity, communication skills, teamwork, attention to detail, initiative, analytical skills, planning, and organization, aptitude for timeliness.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Construction site environment being exposed to loud noise, dust, extreme heat and cold conditions.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Level 1 Carpenter reports directly to the Foreman or Superintendent assigned to the project.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review job plans and layout specifications with the person in charge and plan construction of required form systems.
- Perform general methods of “framing-in” buildings.
- Layout foundations and other parts of the building.
- Complete rough framing of floors, walls, and stairs.
- Adhere to all company safety programs.
- Follow supervisors directions.
- Assist the supervisor in coordinating material handling and equipment usage.
- Operate power hand tools safely.
To perform the following specific tasks:
- Record keeping up to date at all times (time sheets, etc).
- Perform carpentry work of quality level consistent with Snodgrass & Sons standard practices.
- Complete miscellaneous framing details to get units ready for framing inspection (including layout sheet rock, scaffolding, roofing) and the next phase of construction.
- Set concrete forms for sidewalks, walls and stairs (form setter).
- Complete assembly of doors, cabinets, countertops, and trim as well as final punch-list items on interior work (finish carpenter).
