The Software Engineer II provides hands-on development and Tier 2 support for the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) software under guidance from senior engineers. This role focuses on implementing defined features, fixing defects, executing tests, and supporting operational systems in a mission critical NOAA environment.
- Implement software features, enhancements, and defect fixes following established AWIPS SDLC and agile processes.
- Develop unit tests, execute test procedures, and document test results.
- Assist with software installation, configuration, and deployment on Linux platforms.
- Participate in code reviews, test reviews, and design discussions.
- Provide Tier 2 support by reproducing issues, performing root cause analysis, and escalating confirmed software defects.
- Update technical documentation, user guides, and release notes.
- Support troubleshooting under supervision.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience
- 2 to 4 years of software development experience
- Working knowledge of Java and Python
- Experience with Linux environments and Bash scripting
- Familiarity with software testing methodologies and defect tracking tools
- Ability to communicate clearly with technical team members
