Job Description:
The Materials Engineer (Construction Soils) is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and testing soil materials used in construction projects. This role focuses on locating suitable soil deposits, performing geotechnical sampling, analyzing soil properties, and ensuring materials meet engineering, regulatory, and project‑specific standards.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Field Investigation & Soil Identification
- Locate and identify soil materials suitable for construction applications.
- Operate a drill truck and sampling equipment to obtain soil samples.
- Operate and/or supervise the operation of a hydraulic backhoe/bulldozer for sampling soils
- Classify soil based on usability, gradation, plasticity, compaction performance, and suitability.
- Document field and site conditions.
Soil Testing & Materials Evaluation
- Submit sample for various tests including moisture content, Proctor, sieve analysis, and Atterberg limits.
- Interpret results and provide recommendations for material acceptance or treatment.
- Maintain accurate test reports ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Site Research & Mapping
- Utilize GIS mapping tools to evaluate potential soil borrow sources.
- Analyze geological layers, topography, and environmental factors.
- Support long-term materials planning by identifying future borrow sites.
Permitting & Compliance
- Complete permitting requirements for soil extraction, land disturbance, and environmental approvals.
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies and ensure full compliance.
- Maintain updated permitting documentation.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in geotechnical sampling, soil classification, and materials testing.
- Ability to operate drilling and sampling equipment.
- Proficiency with GIS mapping tools.
- Strong understanding of soil behavior and construction material requirements.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to work in field environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with NCDOT testing standards and commercial construction materials.
- Familiarity with permitting processes.
- Experience in borrow pit evaluation or sourcing.

Work Environment
