If selected for this unique opportunity, you will prosecute federal crimes as a Special Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Grand Junction, Colorado. You will be an employee of the Office of the District Attorney for the 21st Judicial District, but working primarily on federal court matters at the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The DA’s Office seeks a District Court Deputy District Attorney to serve as a Special Assistant United States Attorney (“SAUSA”). As a SAUSA, the District Court Deputy District Attorney will work directly with and under the supervision of the U.S. Attorney’s Office to prosecute drug crimes under the U.S. Code, specifically violations of 18 USC § 841 but may include other offenses. The SAUSA will prosecute cases that involve distribution quantities of controlled substances (such as fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin, and cocaine) and that originate in or are connected to Mesa County. The candidate must be comfortable with using good analytical skills to make independent decisions.

The responsibilities for this position include:

Independently prepare and litigate distribution or possession with the intent to distribute drug cases in United States District Court;

Provide agencies (e.g., DEA and HSI) with legal advice, including rules of evidence and rules of procedure;

Perform quality legal research;

Draft memoranda, motions, briefs, and pleadings;

Perform other related duties as assigned or requested

Any one position may not include all of the duties listed; however, the allocation of positions will be determined by the amount of time spent in performing the essential duties listed above.

About You

Selected individuals will undergo a background investigation and must meet the requirements of employment from the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The preferred candidates will be attorneys who have:

Preferred five years of experience as a prosecutor

Experience prosecuting 18 USC § 841 or similar state statutes

Jury-trial experience in Federal, Municipal, or State Court

Ability to immediately step into a courtroom and handle a docket

Strong commitment to public service

Ability to work in a team environment

Strong written and oral advocacy skills

Excellent judgment

Education: Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree or Bachelor of Law Degree.

Experience: At least three (3) years of experience as an attorney at law, including two years of experience prosecuting or defending criminal cases in court.

Licensures/Certification(s): Possession of a license to practice law in Colorado from the Colorado Supreme Court at the time of application. If you are not currently licensed to practice in Colorado, and are selected for this position, you must begin the reciprocity process once you accept your formal offer. By position, the applicant must have a reasonable expectation of becoming licensed by the Colorado Supreme Court within 6 months of their hire date. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

Education / Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education, or education for experience, is permitted.
