PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Implements programs for health services for assigned campus; provides first aid and health services to students; assists RN to help with mitigation of communicable diseases; promotes health education and prevention for students; works under guidance of campus Registered Nurse


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program
  • Valid vocational nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State BON
  • CPR Certification
  • Certification for: Vision and hearing screening, Spinal screening, and AN screening


Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong assessment skills relating to student physical and emotional health
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Effective communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to implement policies and procedures
  • Proficient computer and typing skills


Experience:

  • Two years of nursing experience
  • Community health experience, preferred


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Assists campus nurse to:

  • Provide first aid and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff according to district policy.
  • Advocate for students regarding health issues.
  • Serve as a health liaison between school, physician, parents, and the community.
  • Notify parents of illness or injury.
  • Obtain medical help for students in emergency cases if needed.
  • Administer medication to students at school according to district policy.
  • Perform screenings and make referrals.
  • Provide health counseling to individual students.
  • Communicate with campus nurse regarding any health concerns.
  • Maintain current immunization records.
  • Document and maintain accurate clinic records and update as needed.
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Provide clinic procedure and medication administration training to campus staff that will cover nursing duties when nurses are away.
  • Provide basic training to employees regarding food allergies, signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, use of epi pens, and AED use.
  • Follows all rules, regulations and policies of the Denton ISD and follows directives from superiors.
  • Other duties as assigned.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands: Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interprets policy, procedures, and data; coordinates district functions; maintains emotional control under stress


Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Frequent district-wide and occasional statewide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; prolonged use of computer and repetitive hand motions; exposure to communicable diseases.
