Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Specialty Ophthalmic Technician to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in ophthalmology, patient care, and medical office procedures. In this role, you will support ophthalmologists by performing specialized eye assessments, assisting with patient intake, and ensuring the delivery of comprehensive eye care services. Your expertise will contribute to providing an outstanding experience for our patients while maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

Duties

  • Conduct thorough patient intake, including collecting medical history and documenting symptoms accurately in electronic medical records (EMR) systems such as Nextech.
  • Ability to perform basic skills: Measuring and recording acuities, lensometry, color vision testing, autorefraction, evaluation of pupils, keratometry, dilation of pupils, stereoscopic vision testing, basic ocular motility, confrontational visual field testing, color plates, basic tonometry (including Goldman applanation tonometry and tonopen), basic principles of contact lenses care and cleaning, operation of AED and emergency oxygen supplies.
  • Utilize aseptic techniques during procedures to maintain a sterile environment and prevent infections.
  • Assist with optical testing, including visual acuity, refraction, and other diagnostic procedures related to ophthalmology.
  • Support clinic operations by managing medical records, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations, and maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Perform advanced diagnostic imaging and laboratory testing for ocular surface disease, dry eye, corneal disease, and specialty contact lens evaluations.
  • Assist with specialty contact lens services including scleral, rigid gas permeable, hybrid, and prosthetic lens workflows.
  • Prepare patients and assist providers with advanced procedures including punctal occlusion and amniotic membrane placement.
  • Independently perform approved specialty ocular surface and dry eye procedures including Rinsada, BlephEx, ZEST, LipiFlow, IPL, and radiofrequency (RF) treatments in accordance with clinic protocols and certifications.
  • Apply physiology, anatomy, and medical terminology knowledge to accurately document findings and assist in patient education.
  • Collaborate with front desk staff on scheduling, billing, and insurance documentation, including medical coding and billing processes.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year optometry or ophthalmology experience or equivalent training.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology relevant to eye health.
  • Familiarity with EMR systems such as Nextech or similar platforms; experience with medical records management is preferred.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations to ensure patient privacy and data security at all times.
  • Experience with optical testing equipment and techniques used in ophthalmology clinics.
  • Ability to perform vital signs measurement accurately and follow aseptic protocols diligently.
