The Marshall Independent is seeking a Sports Editor to lead our sports coverage with energy and a keen eye for detail. In this role, you will be responsible for curating compelling sports stories, managing content quality, and engaging our audience across multiple platforms. Duties

• Develop and oversee a comprehensive sports content strategy that aligns with audience interests and platform goals
• Write, edit, and proofread articles, features, game recaps, and opinion pieces using AP style guidelines to ensure clarity and consistency
• Coordinate photography to capture key moments during sporting events, including editing visual content for publication
• Manage social media channels by creating engaging posts, sharing breaking news, and fostering community interaction through social media management tools
• Conduct thorough research and fact-checking to ensure accuracy of all sports reporting
• Maintain editorial calendars and meet deadlines consistently while ensuring content remains lively, accurate, and engaging

Experience

• Proven experience in sports journalism or editing with a strong portfolio of published work demonstrating excellent writing skills and storytelling ability
• Proficiency in AP style for clear and professional journalism standards
• Skilled in photography
• Strong communication skills to coordinate with team members and interview sources confidently
• Experience managing social media platforms to grow audience engagement and brand presence
• Knowledge of research methods for sports statistics, history, and current events to support accurate reporting
