Sr. AWS DevOps Database Engineer
Clearance: Must be eligible for a US Security Clearance (US Citizenship required)
Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid, mostly remote)
We are looking for a Sr. AWS DevOps Database Engineer which requires expertise in AWS RDS (Aurora, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle on EC2), database administration, infrastructure automation, and DevOps best practices. The ideal candidate will have experience leading the design, automation and maintenance of an AWS environment. They will also have experience building Terraform infrastructure-as-code (IaC) solutions, working with CI/CD pipelines, disaster recovery, cost management and implementing monitoring and security best practices across AWS environments. Additionally, this role involves mentoring engineers, improving DevOps processes, and collaborating with development teams in an Agile Scrum environment to maintain and enhance cloud infrastructure. This role ensures infrastructure remains robust, secure, and scalable while driving cost optimization, security best practices, and incident response strategies. Experience migrating cloud workloads to AWS is required.
Responsibilities:
Database Administration & Support
  • Deep experience designing, operating, and optimizing Oracle database environments in AWS, with a focus on scalability, availability, security, and cost efficiency.
  • Proven ability to support enterprise Oracle workloads in AWS, including architecture design, operational automation, and adherence to best practices for cloud-hosted databases.
  • Experience with AWS MySQL RDS.
  • Ability to tune, monitor, backup, restore and support AWS RDS
AWS Cloud Infrastructure DevOps & Automation:
  • Design, build, and maintain AWS cloud environments with a focus on automation and security.
  • Automate provisioning and management of AWS resources using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) with Terraform (familiarity with AWS CloudFormation and AWS CDK a plus).
  • Assist with implementing proactive security measures, including vulnerability remediation, patching, and firewall rule management.
  • Maintain compliance with security standards and internal policies, supporting security audits and assessments.
  • Monitor AWS cost usage and provide cost optimization recommendations, ensuring efficient resource scaling.
  • Deploy, configure, and maintain AWS services such as EC2, S3, ECR, CloudWatch, Lambda, and SSM.
  • Manage CI/CD pipelines with Bitbucket Pipelines and Jenkins.
  • Implement database automation in alignment with AWS best practices.
Monitoring & Security
  • Implement monitoring and logging using AWS native tools (CloudWatch, SSM Agent, GuardDuty, Security Hub) and Datadog.
  • Ensure database and infrastructure compliance with AWS security standards (IAM policies, VPC security, KMS encryption).
  • Troubleshoot database and infrastructure performance issues using Datadog and AWS performance tools.
  • Collaborate with security teams to harden database and cloud environments.
Required Qualifications:
  • 5-8 years of database administration experience (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL) in AWS.
  • 3+ years of AWS experience, with a strong grasp of AWS infrastructure and services.
  • Proficiency in Terraform and Ansible for infrastructure automation.
  • Hands-on experience with Bitbucket Pipelines and Jenkins for CI/CD automation.
  • Strong SQL and database scripting skills for automation, tuning, and ETL troubleshooting.
  • Experience working with AWS Linux, Rocky Linux, and RHEL.
  • Ability to secure and monitor AWS environments with CloudWatch, SSM, Datadog, and IAM best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, working across DevOps and database teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Docker and containerized database deployments.
  • Knowledge of AWS networking and security best practices (VPC, IAM, KMS, Security Hub).
  • Understanding of AWS Well-Architected Framework for database deployments.
Education and Work Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (preferred) or equivalent experience.
  • Must be Public Trust eligible (which requires US Citizenship)
