Senior Substation Engineer (Contract)
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Substation Engineer to support a high volume of utility and customer-driven substation projects throughout California. This role is ideal for an engineer who thrives in a fast-moving environment, is confident working independently, and can take ownership of project intake, contractor oversight, and field coordination. The selected contractor will help move projects efficiently from initiation through completion while working closely with field personnel and external partners.
Key Responsibilities
Project and Contractor Management

Oversee external engineering contractors and ensure all deliverables meet required standards.

Manage incoming project requests, establish priorities, and initiate project workflows.

Track progress, resolve issues, and maintain momentum on multiple concurrent projects.
Substation Engineering Support

Provide technical input and engineering review for substation-related work.

Ensure designs follow applicable utility standards and industry practices.

Support multi-disciplinary engineering activities across various substation project types.
Field Coordination and Communication

Serve as an on-site engineering representative during field activities.

Communicate clearly with contractors, customers, and internal stakeholders.

Participate in meetings and field visits with confidence and professionalism.
Required Qualifications

Hands-on experience in substation engineering within a utility or power delivery environment.

Experience managing contractors and supporting project intake and execution.

Strong project management capabilities with experience leading cross-functional efforts.

Strong communication skills and confidence in field interactions.

Ability to work independently and make informed decisions with minimal oversight.
Preferred Qualifications

Work Structure

Hybrid role: approximately 2 days per week in Sacramento, Fresno, or Oakland.

Additional 2–3 days per week on job sites throughout California.
