The Junior Mechanical Engineer develops and implements electro-mechanical systems on new and existing products, including modifications, revisions, and enhancements in accordance with applicable regulations and standards. The position focuses on mechanical design and CAD modeling for the first 1-2 years, to build a detailed knowledge base on Baker current and past technologies, while being actively involved in developing Baker’s future technologies. The person selected for this position will physically work in Sanford, ME.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with a variety of team members and stake holders, including vendors, production, purchasing, customer service, senior management, finance, CAM, and engineering for the design and construction of new products and modification or customization to existing products
  • Work with moderate supervision to conceptualize, plan, organize, and conduct detailed mechanical designs
  • Generate 3D models and detailed drawings using engineering computer-aided design systems
  • Work with senior engineers and product specialists to research, develop, analyze, design, and test company products using engineering and scientific principles. Analyze and verify product design and performance for adequacy, including airflow characteristics, strength of components, manufacturing tolerances, and other attributes as required.
  • Document design and technical data using accepted engineering documentation practices (drawings, bills of material, manuals, test reports, design reviews)
  • Generate engineering documentation, specifications, engineering quality, and required data for the assigned projects
  • Work closely, and in partnership, with management team to ensure that all customers’ needs are anticipated and met
  • Effectively communicate concepts and design through presentations, reviews, team meetings, etc.
  • Work with customers to determine requirements and translate the requirements into technical drawings and cost estimates.
  • Manage projects through the design, review, manufacturing, and installation phases.
  • Generate and revise Bills of Material, and Bills of Operations, as described in the company’s design release process
  • Provide information and support to the manufacturing department as needed
  • Generate engineering change requests (ECR’s) and execute engineering change orders (ECO’s) as described in the company’s EC process.
  • Make every effort to focus on doing-it-right to make sure the customer is happy or satisfied with our units.
  • Provide value to our customers by using Lean tools and concepts to identify and eliminate waste in all forms (scrap/rework, transportation, motion, waiting, inventory, over production, over processing, and under-utilization of people). Uses systemic thinking by seeing processes from end to end and works to challenge the status quo to eliminate the root cause of problems. Is involved in individual and/or team activities that involve using Lean tools and concepts to improve the flow of information and material.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift materials and parts weighing between 30-40 lbs. occasionally (10%-20% of the time)
  • Must be able to work on elevated stands, climb stepladders and work in a standing position occasionally (25% - 35% of the time)
  • Must be able to work at a computer for up to 100% of the time

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering required
  • 0-2 years of mechanical engineering design experience preferred
  • Effective technical skills to translate design requirements into detailed mechanical designs
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Creativity
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with 3D CAD (2D and/or Solid Edge preferred)
  • Works well in a team environment
