Job Overview
Staff attorneys provide a wide range of civil legal representation, advocacy and outreach to low-income individuals. Though attorneys may occasionally work outside of their primary practice area, our civil litigation focuses on a broad range of matters, including housing, consumer, education, federal income tax, elder, employment, family, probate, public benefits, and migrant farmworker cases. No prior experience in all these areas is required. Attorneys typically focus their practice in a few areas and receive training and mentorship as needed.

Responsibilities

CLIENT INTAKE

1. Conduct initial interviews of applicants to include outreach events to determine their eligibility and legal needs based on individual circumstances.

B) LEGAL RESEARCH, CASE ANALYSIS, AND MANAGEMENT

1. Research relevant laws and regulations to devise case strategies.

2. Gather facts by communicating with clients, opposing parties, and witnesses.

3. Prepare legal documents, file and defend legal documents and actions, and respond to necessary documents, such as pleadings, motions, discovery, memoranda, interrogatories, and appeals while paying particular attention to deadlines.

4. Appear in state and federal courts for hearings, trials, Rules to Show Cause, Pre-Trial, and status conferences.

C) REPRESENTATION

1. Provide counseling, advice, and other brief services to clients.

2. Represent clients and client groups in litigation and administrative advocacy.

3. Collaborate with other attorneys as needed.

4. Identify potential areas for litigation and advocacy to address systemic legal issues and bring the same to the attention of Unit Heads and the Director of Litigation and Training.

5. Develop and implement litigation and advocacy strategies to address systemic legal issues.

6. Comply with the South Carolina Rules of Professional Conduct.

Requirements

  • Member of the SC Bar
  • Litigation and clinical experience preferred but not required if committed to:
  • (a)Public interest/poverty law
  • (b)Working with low-income, underserved, rural, diverse clients and client communities
  • (c)Ability to collaborate effectively with other advocates and those agencies that serve the low-income community
  • Knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedures, Rules of Evidence, Rules of the Family Court, and Rules of Appellate Procedure
  • Excellent relationship building, leadership, and research skills
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation communication skills; bilingual skills are a
  • plus, but
  • not required
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint Online
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record, as use of the firm’s vehicles may be required

Pay: From $68,250.00 per year
