Staff Attorney – Remote, Montana Licensed

Remote, United States

Overview
J.D. Hudson Law, PLLC, a Montana-based remote law firm, is seeking a Montana-licensed Staff Attorney to assist with family law and civil litigation matters, with occasional support on DUI cases as needed. This role provides an average of 10–20 billable hours per week, with $100/hour compensation and flexible remote scheduling. This role is designed for newer attorneys (1–2 years of experience) who want meaningful courtroom exposure, hands-on client responsibility, and steady casework in a growing practice. The position is structured as an independent contractor engagement (1099) with $100/hour compensation and flexible remote work.

As the managing attorney, I am actively litigating and building the firm, and I understand the challenges faced in the first years of practice. This role provides the opportunity to work independently while also receiving direct feedback, case review, and practical guidance to support your development as a confident advocate. Occasional in-person hearings may be required if you are located in Montana; otherwise, court appearances will be handled via Zoom or telephone.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary counsel on assigned family law and civil cases from intake to resolution (including hearings, mediations, and trials), with guidance and review available from the managing attorney as needed.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, discovery requests/responses, and client correspondence.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare case strategy outlines.
  • Communicate with clients and opposing counsel in a professional and timely manner.
  • Appear at hearings remotely (or in person when required, if located in Montana).
  • Manage assigned cases independently, while receiving mentorship and oversight where appropriate.
  • Provide occasional support on DUI defense and other matters as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Licensed and in good standing with the Montana Bar.
  • 0–2 years of practice experience. Recent admittees encouraged; candidates with up to 1 year of practice experience will be given priority.
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated.
  • Prior exposure to family law or civil litigation (through clinics, clerkships, internships, or practice) preferred but not required.
  • Interest in developing negotiation, courtroom advocacy, and client management skills.
  • Comfortable with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and standard legal tech tools.

Compensation & Structure

  • $100/hour.
  • Paid as a 1099 independent contractor.
  • 10–20 billable hours per week on average, with potential for more as caseload grows.
  • Fully remote role with flexible scheduling.
  • Independence in handling assigned cases, with mentorship and feedback available from the managing attorney to support attorneys in their first years of practice.
