2.0 Job Summary 2.1 Responsible for the provision of nursing care that meets PSMMC Competency Standards for Registered Nurse, including individual accountability for action within the scope, practices and framework for Registered Nurse in accordance with PSMMC Policies and Procedure.
3.0 Duties And Responsibilities
3.1 Clinical- Deliver and maintains safe quality nursing care according to PSMMC policies and procedures.
- Utilize evidence-based approach in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
- Recognize and act on changes in patient condition, making safe, timely decisions appropriate to the situation.
- Assist team leaders and members in liaising between healthcare professionals, physicians and allied healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate medical care is provided to all patients.
- Ensure that appropriate documentation e.g. consent medical assessment and others is obtained and maintained for patients undergoing relevant medical treatment. Respond to life-saving situations following the appropriate nursing standards and protocols to treatment.
- Ensures safe administration and management of medication after passing the competency.
- Apply knowledge and operate safely in handling specialized and technological equipment.
- Advocate on behalf of their patients to ensure quality healthcare services are provided. Maintain professional interpersonal relationships with patients, families and coworkers / other members of the health care team.
- Maintain and protect the safety, confidentiality and dignity of patients and families.
- Maintain a clean, safe and tidy unit.
- Maintain privacy and confidentiality of all patient related information in relation to service provision and healthcare treatments and services.
3.2 Leadership and Management- Provide support to all nursing staff.
- Contribute on the development of the nursing team by recognizing and valuing contributions from individuals within the team and providing clinical support.
- Work with team members to define clear individual roles and responsibilities.
- Ensure all written or verbal information is clear, accurate and presented that is appropriate to the target group; deliver all communication with clarity, accuracy and free from jargon.
- Provide education to patients, relatives and care givers.
- Handle conflicts and misunderstandings in a professional manner with satisfactory resolution.
- Act as a professional role model, mentor, and preceptor for staff and students.
- Deal with complaints promptly and sensitively with appropriate documentation and follow-up reports to the Charge Nurse.
- Assume accountability for quality care delivered to patients.
- Take charge of the unit in the absence of the Charge Nurse / Team leader.
- Implement the mission and values statement and standards of the Nursing Department.
- Monitor the use of stock items and order when necessary.
3.3 Professional Development- Participate in continuing education, facilitate training activities and teaching other members of clinical staff.
- Takes responsibility for own professional development.
- Provide health education to patients, relatives and caregivers.
- Maintain generic and unit specific competencies up-to-date.
3.4 Quality Improvement- Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
- Uphold quality initiatives that improve customer care and enhance the interface between staff and patients.
- Participate in the implementation and evaluation of action plans for performance improvement.
- Develop and review policies, procedures and required protocols in collaboration with relevant nursing leaders and managers.
- Perform other applicable tasks within the employee's knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Apply measures and guidelines of patient experience improvement projects.
3.5 Unit Specific Additional Duties and Responsibilities 3.6 Psychiatry- Conduct psychiatry nursing and risk assessment focusing on patient needs and primary teams management issues.
- Take past and present medical/psychiatric history through interview to determine treatment needs.
- Conduct mental state examination and risk assessment/management of potentially aggressive and violent patients.
- Prioritize patient intervention and carry out prescribed treatment as requested by the primary treating team.
- Coordinate with Psychiatrist, Social Worker and Psychologist in the evaluation of treatment and planning.
- Conduct specific monitoring and education regarding management of mental health disorders and recommended treatment plan within the psycho-educational policy.
- Attend management and ward rounds and relay changes to the nursing team.
3.7 Intensive Care Services (ICS)- Provide direct and individualized total nursing care based on scientific nursing principles and maintain standards within ICS policies and procedures.
- Assist team leaders and liaise with other health care providers to ensure appropriate treatment for ICU patients.
- Assist physicians with invasive and non-invasive bedside procedures and adhere to aseptic technique.
- Ensure ICCA programs and critical care scoring are carried out and documented.
- Ensure ICS equipment is functioning properly.
- Knowledge on safe handling and operation of specialized equipment.
3.8 Rapid Response Team (RRT / MedEvac) Nurse- Respond in a timely manner during emergency RRT calls.
- Ensure patient clinical data are available; assist in airway management and ensure RRT drugs are complete and available.
- Maintain RRT/MedEvac trolleys and monitor mobile patients; ensure documentation and equipment are ready for MedEvac.
3.9 Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)- Assist in life-saving resuscitation and invasive interventions; assess and treat critically ill pediatric patients from admission to discharge or transfer.
- Manage complex IV infusions and titrations; perform PICU competencies as required.
3.10 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)- Attend high-risk deliveries as NRP provider; provide quality nursing care for neonates with ventilation support.
- Perform NICU-specific competencies and participate in NICU procedures (e.g., intubation, IV lines, transfusions).
3.11 General Pediatrics- Deliver nursing care for medical/surgical pediatric patients aged 1 day to 14 years; perform pediatric assessments and participate in stabilization/transfer decisions.
3.12 Support Services / 3.13 Stoma Care Nurse- Plan, coordinate and implement stoma care activities; develop protocols and documentation; advocate for patient care; maintain monthly and yearly reports for the Stoma Care Committee.
3.14 Wound Care Nurse- Plan and implement wound care activities; develop protocols; manage wound changes in collaboration with the team; ensure adequate dressings and supplies.
3.15 Patients Advocate Nurse- Discuss living donation processes, donor evaluation, and psychosocial assessment; ensure donor decision is voluntary and supported by family; address emotional aspects and donor support.
3.16 IV Nurse- Coordinate IV care; liaise with professionals; assess changes in patient condition; advocate for intravenous care quality.
3.17 Parenteral Nutrition (PN) Nurse- Assess and manage PN administration; develop PN protocols; monitor hematology/biochemistry status; manage vascular access device complications; participate in PN rounds.
3.18 Tracheostomy Nurse- Perform initial tracheostomy assessment and care program; manage emergency tracheostomy issues; coordinate with ENT and teams; document and report to committees.
3.19 Endoscopy Nurse- Provide care for procedures; assist physicians with bronchoscopy/EGD/ERCP; ensure equipment readiness and post-procedure recovery; handle sterilization steps.
3.20 Emergency Room Nurse- Assess and intervene in emergencies per ED scope; collaborate with multidisciplinary teams; assist in procedures; support staff development.
3.21 Obstetrics and Gynaecology Nurse- Coordinate with physicians for ante-natal, post-natal and gynecology care per standards and protocols.
3.22 Ante-Natal Ward / Labor Ward- Assist Staff Midwife in delivery, CTG monitoring, delivery assistance, newborn care, and post-delivery procedures.
3.23 Chemotherapy Day Unit (CDU) Oncology Nurse- Assess patient suitability for chemotherapy; provide pre-procedure education; coordinate drug availability; administer chemotherapy and supportive treatments; manage complications; educate patients on pump use; handle cytotoxic spills; manage CVADs and assist in related procedures.
3.24 Adult / Pediatric Hematology / Oncology- Administer chemotherapy and supportive meds; provide psycho-social support; coordinate with social workers; educate patients; assist in diagnostic procedures; manage long-term access devices and transplant readiness.
