Shalom Institute of Mental Health and Research is a leading psychiatric and de-addiction center dedicated to research, rehabilitation, and innovation in mental health care. The institute’s multidisciplinary team includes five psychiatrists, one physician, a clinical psychologist, mental health professionals, nurses, and a skilled support staff. The hospital also offers specialized treatment for schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder,post-traumatic stress disorder, de-addiction treatment for people with alcohol addiction, drug addiction, depression, children with various behavioural problems and institutionalized care for geriaric psychiatric patients. Job Summary

We are seeking a compassionate, resilient, and vigilant Staff Nurse to join our team. Unlike general nursing, this role focuses heavily on behavioral observation, therapeutic communication, and patient safety. You will be responsible for administering medication, assisting in psychiatric procedures (like ECT), and maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment for patients recovering from acute mental health conditions.

1. Medication Administration & Compliance

  • Administer oral and injectable psychotropic medications strictly as per the doctor's order.
  • Mouth Checks: Perform strict visual checks to prevent "cheeking" or hoarding of medication.
  • Monitor patients for side effects of psychiatric drugs (e.g., tremors, stiffness, drowsiness, excessive salivation) and report immediately to the RMO.

2. Patient Observation & Safety

  • Conduct hourly rounds (or more frequent "suicide watch" checks) to ensure patient location and safety.
  • Observe and document changes in behavior, sleep patterns, appetite, and social interaction in the Nurses' Daily Notes.
  • Maintain a hazard-free environment; check patient belongings during admission for sharp objects, cords, or unauthorized items.

3. Crisis Management & De-escalation

  • Recognize early signs of agitation or aggression in patients.
  • Use verbal de-escalation techniques to calm distressed patients.
  • Assist in the safe physical restraint or seclusion of violent patients only when necessary and strictly according to hospital protocol and human rights guidelines.

4. General Nursing Care & Hygiene

  • Monitor Vital Signs (BP, Pulse, Temp) regularly.
  • Ensure patients maintain personal hygiene; assist dependent or catatonic patients with bathing, feeding, and grooming.
  • Manage medical comorbidities (dressing wounds, managing IV lines/catheters, monitoring blood sugar for diabetic patients).

5. ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy) Duties (If applicable)

  • Pre-ECT: Ensure the patient is NPO (fasting), check consent forms, and remove dentures/jewellery.
  • Intra-ECT: Assist the anesthetist and psychiatrist during the procedure.
  • Post-ECT: Monitor recovery, orientation levels, and vital signs in the recovery room until the patient is stable.
