Staff Nurse (Diff Eligible)

We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Per-Diem, Staff Nurse (Diff Eligible) to be part of our WA Center for Apheresis Therapy team. The role will perform therapeutic apheresis procedures on adult patients and donors in-house, as well as on pediatric and adult patients at area hospitals.

Principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to: As a Bloodworks Apheresis Staff Nurse:

  • Perform all therapeutic procedures on the Spectra Optia, including Plasma exchanges, Red Cell exchanges, Leukapheresis, and Therapeutic Depletions.
  • Collect blood componentsfromn subjects enrolled in internal and external research studies.
  • Organize a plan for the procedure before starting, i.e., coordination with the Medical Director, making phone calls to hospitals, etc.
  • Measure vital signs and compare them to normal values for heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, and blood pressure. Report variations to physicians.
  • Perform venipuncture for both blood sampling and therapeutic and/or research procedures.
  • Draw blood samples for various tests into appropriate tubes, properly labeled and with lab slips. Deliver blood samples to the proper lab for processing.
  • Recognize changes in the patient's clinical status and notify the patient's physician of adverse events.
  • Evaluate the patient's plan of care and tolerance of therapeutic procedures.
  • Familiarize oneself with the medical problems of patients to be pheresed and ask the ordering physicians whether any special complications might be anticipated.
  • Evaluate the respiratory and cardiovascular status of patients and donors. Notify the physician of any complications.
  • Explain all aspects of procedures to donors and patients before beginning.
  • Record nursing notes, lab values, and other patient-related information.
  • Administer medication when needed orally, subcutaneously, and/or intravenously.
  • Administer blood components as per the MD's order.
  • Identify a transfusion reaction and follow the protocol for a reaction.
  • Demonstrate proper administration of oxygen per nasal prongs, mask, and ambu bag.
  • Know the location of the emergency medications.
  • Assist physicians and paramedics with emergency procedures.
  • Use and properly care for A-V shunts and central venous catheters (i.e., Quinton, Hickman, etc.).
  • Utilize equipmenttroubleshootroubleshoot the department's equipment. When unable to solve problems on their own, they utilize resources, i.e., company services, company technical assistance, Bloodworks manuals, etc.
  • Use point-of-care testing equipment in-house or at area hospitals.
  • Perform on-call responsibilities on a rotating basis with co-workers.
  • Properly screen potential donors for acceptability by checking medical history, medication records, labs, etc. Understand the post-donation issues faced by returning donors.
  • Listen with empathy to patients and family members.
  • Maintain a pleasant environment for donors and patients.
  • Maintain a good working rapport with physicians, lab personnel, and fellow staff members.
  • Communicate effectively with peers to identify errors or problems; express views without being judgmental or condescending; ask for help when necessary.
  • Order and stock supplies forthe department.
  • Maintain a clean work area and equipment. Intervene to provide a safe environment, i.e, wipe up spills, position electrical cords out of walkways, keep halls clear, and follow smoking regulations.
  • Create, modify, maintain, and transmit electronic records in a controlled and approved manner in conformance with FDA requirements.
  • Must maintain an active Washington State Registered Nurse license.
  • Comply with all applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as written.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Graduate ofan accredited school of nursing with a current license from the State of Washington as a registered nurse.
  • Three years' experience working in an acute care setting is required, with previous apheresis, phlebotomy, ICU/CCU, or dialysis experience strongly preferred.
Specific job skills include, but are not limited to:
  • Mental activities involve continuous use of interpersonal skills, decision-making, teamwork, customer service, reading, writing, speaking, English comprehension, independent judgment and/or independent action, and the use of discretion, as well as performing basic math. Common mental activities include creativity, problem analysis, and negotiation. Occasionally used mental activities include mentoring, presentations/teaching, and training/supervising. A rarely used mental skill is performing advanced Math (analysis, statistics, significant data, or number manipulation).
  • Physical activities include continuous standing, talking, hearing, and handling. Physical activities used frequently include walking, stooping, bending, reaching, repetitive hand/wrist and foot motions, pushing/pulling up to 400 lbs, and carrying up to 30 lbs. Occasional sitting, kneeling, feeling, lifting to 30 lbs, and rarely crawling or climbing.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Frequent, constant standing and extensive close work.
  • Occasional extensive travel, substantial overtime, on-call status, and heavy lifting.
  • As this is an essential position with direct responsibility to donors and/or patients, the incumbent should be prepared to work extended and/or consecutive shifts, and possibly at a different location, during periods of inclement weather or other emergencies.
  • To access some client facilities, the incumbent may be required to apply for and obtain clearance to enter the client property. This clearance process may require the incumbent to undergo additional levels of screening beyond the Bloodworks standard pre-employment screening.
  • Ability to work scheduled holidays and weekends.
  • This position has direct exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
