Job Description – Staff Nurse (Labor Ward)

Position: Staff Nurse – Labor Ward

Reports to: CNO

Department: Obstetrics & Gynecology (Labor Ward)

Job Summary

The Staff Nurse in the labor ward is responsible for providing skilled nursing care to mothers during labor, delivery, and immediate postnatal period. The nurse ensures safe maternal and neonatal outcomes through monitoring, assisting obstetricians, supporting normal deliveries, managing emergencies, and offering emotional support to the mother and family.

Key Roles & ResponsibilitiesClinical Care

  • Admit and assess women in labor, take history, and perform initial examinations.
  • Monitor maternal and fetal conditions (vital signs, contractions, fetal heart rate).
  • Prepare and maintain labor room equipment and supplies in a sterile manner.
  • Assist doctors in conducting normal deliveries and cesarean sections.
  • Provide immediate newborn care, including resuscitation if required.
  • Administer prescribed medications and IV fluids safely.
  • Assist in pain management and provide emotional reassurance to the mother.
  • Maintain infection control practices and ensure aseptic techniques.
  • Identify obstetric emergencies (e.g., PPH, eclampsia, fetal distress) and initiate prompt action.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate labor records, partographs, and nursing notes.
  • Document delivery details, maternal and neonatal conditions.
  • Report any complications to the attending physician immediately.

Patient & Family Support

  • Educate mothers and families about labor process, delivery, and newborn care.
  • Support breastfeeding initiation and postnatal care practices.
  • Provide psychological and emotional support during and after delivery.

Teamwork & Coordination

  • Work collaboratively with obstetricians, anesthetists, pediatricians, and other healthcare staff.
  • Participate in emergency drills and continuous training programs.
  • Ensure smooth handover during shift changes.

Qualifications & Skills

  • GNM / B.Sc. Nursing with valid nursing registration (INC/State Nursing Council).
  • Prior experience in labor ward / maternity care preferred.
  • Knowledge of obstetric nursing procedures, neonatal resuscitation, and infection control.
  • Good communication, empathy, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to handle emergencies and work under pressure.

Work Conditions

  • Rotational shifts including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Exposure to emergencies and high-stress situations.
  • Physical stamina required for assisting in deliveries and emergency care.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent, Fresher

Pay: ₹12,000.00 - ₹20,000.00 per month
