Staff Software Engineer

Technical Leadership & Architecture

• Lead the design and evolution of large-scale, distributed systems handling high throughput, low latency, and high availability.
• Own system architecture decisions for microservices, APIs, data stores, and inter-service communication.
• Drive scalability, resiliency, fault tolerance, and performance across services.
• Identify architectural risks and proactively propose improvements or simplifications.

Hands-On Engineering

• Write high-quality, production-grade Java code (Java 11/17+), setting the bar for engineering excellence.
• Design and implement cloud-native microservices using modern frameworks (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, etc.).
• Build systems that support horizontal scaling, zero-downtime deployments, and graceful degradation.
• Lead complex refactors and migrations (monolith microservices, legacy cloud-native).

Cloud & Platform Engineering (AWS)

• Design and operate services on AWS, leveraging:
  • Compute: ECS, EKS, EC2, Lambda (as appropriate)
  • Data: RDS, DynamoDB, Aurora, S3, ElastiCache
  • Messaging/Streaming: SQS, SNS, Kafka, Kinesis
• Implement infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK).
• Partner with DevOps/SRE to improve observability, reliability, and cost efficiency.

System Design & Engineering Excellence

• Define and enforce best practices for:
  • API design (REST/gRPC, versioning, backward compatibility)
  • Data modeling and consistency (SQL/NoSQL, eventual consistency)
  • Security (authentication, authorization, secrets management)
• Review designs and code across teams; provide clear, actionable feedback.
• Lead technical deep dives, design reviews, and post-mortems.

Mentorship & Influence

• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers on system design, distributed systems, and Java best practices.
• Act as a trusted technical advisor to engineering leadership and product partners.
• Drive alignment on architectural standards and long-term technical vision.

Required Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant time building backend systems in Java.
• Deep expertise in Java (11+), concurrency, memory management, and JVM performance tuning.
• Proven experience designing and building distributed, microservice-based systems at scale.
• Strong hands-on experience with AWS and cloud-native architectures.
• Excellent system design skills: data modeling, service boundaries, scaling strategies, failure handling.
• Experience with high-availability, low-latency, high-throughput systems.
• Strong understanding of networking, APIs, and asynchronous communication.
• Experience building multi-region, globally distributed systems.
• Ability to influence without authority and collaborate across multiple teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in payments, fintech, e-commerce, or other high-reliability domains.
• Experience with event-driven architectures and streaming platforms (Kafka).
• Familiarity with Kubernetes and service mesh technologies.
• Strong background in security, compliance, and data protection.
• Contributions to architecture standards, platform teams, or shared services.
