Position Overview:
Due to grant funding requirements, eligibility for this position is limited to individuals who reside in Baltimore City.
The STEM Camp Instructor will lead hands-on STEM activities for rising 3rd-8th graders during the Black SONs Summer STEM Camp. The instructor will facilitate engaging, interactive learning experiences in subjects such as chemistry, environmental science, artificial intelligence, robotics, coding, engineering, and other STEM topics. The STEM Camp Instructor will work closely with the Camp Director and other staff to create a fun and educational environment while ensuring campers' safety and participation. In addition to classroom-based instruction, students will participate in 6 field trips during the six week camp, and all staff are required to attend and participate in these outings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching & Curriculum Delivery:
- Lead STEM lessons and activities that align with the camp’s curriculum.
- Develop and deliver interactive lessons in areas such as chemistry, environmental science, Artificial Intelligence, robotics, coding, engineering, and other STEM disciplines.
- Adapt lessons to suit the age, skill level, and interests of campers.
- Provide individualized support to campers who may need additional help with projects or tasks; math tutoring
- Activity Facilitation:
- Oversee STEM-related hands-on projects, experiments, and group activities.
- Assist campers with building, creating, and testing STEM projects (e.g., robots, circuits, simple machines).
- Foster a positive learning environment that encourages curiosity and problem-solving.
- Classroom Management:
- Maintain a positive, disciplined, and organized classroom environment.
- Ensure the safety of all campers and promote good behavior and teamwork.
- Monitor camper progress and provide individual guidance when needed.
- Communication & Reporting:
- Work closely with fellow instructors, counselors, and the Camp Director to ensure smooth operation of the camp.
- Create daily and weekly reports summarizing student participation, engagement, and areas needing support.
- Communicate with parents or guardians about any concerns or camper progress as needed.
- Collaborate with the Camp Director to evaluate and adjust curriculum for the best camper engagement and learning outcomes.
- Safety & Supervision:
- Follow and enforce camp safety protocols, ensuring the well-being of all campers.
- Supervise campers during STEM activities, breaks, and lunchtime.
- Address any camper behavior issues or concerns in accordance with camp policies.
- Professional Development:
- Attend staff orientation and training sessions before camp begins.
- Participate in ongoing staff meetings to receive feedback and improve teaching methods.
- Stay updated on STEM teaching strategies and incorporate innovative approaches into lessons.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree (or current enrollment in a degree program) in STEM-related fields such as Education, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Master’s degree or teaching credential (preferred but not required).
- Experience:
- Prior experience teaching or tutoring children in a STEM or educational setting.
- Experience with hands-on STEM projects (e.g., robotics, coding, circuits) is highly preferred.
- Skills:
- Ability to explain STEM concepts in a clear and engaging manner.
- Strong classroom management skills and the ability to work with children in a positive and encouraging way.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Other Requirements:
- Must be available on-site at Coppin State University from June 22 - July 31, 2026.
- Must pass fingerprint-based Criminal Background Check
- First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to the start of camp).
- Ability to create a supportive, engaging, and safe learning environment for campers.
Schedule & Compensation:
- Work Schedule: Monday through Friday (approximately 8am - 4 PM)
- Compensation: $30.00 per hour (non-exempt)
