Strategic Planning Specialist

About the Role

As a Strategic Planning Specialist, you’ll work with firm principals, public-sector clients, and other consulting partners to support public agencies in strategically shaping and delivering their capital programs that keep cities running and ready for what’s next. Your work may include:

  • Supporting clients with reviewing, prioritizing and updating their capital improvement plans
  • Helping clients design and refine clear project development and prioritization frameworks
  • Supporting clients with long-range capital planning that accounts for climate change, regulatory drivers, and financial realities
  • Supporting clients with development of area studies and plans
  • Providing coordination support across agencies on high-impact, citywide initiatives
  • Facilitating productive collaboration with client teams and external stakeholders
  • Serving as a trusted day-to-day partner to clients, communicating clearly, and delivering high-quality work that supports decision-making

  • Providing coordination support for clients with their development of program delivery and project management processes from planning through execution
  • Contributing to light business development and internal operations as the firm grows

This is a hybrid-role, with in-office collaboration at client sites in San Francisco (Civic Center, Embarcadero, and/or Financial District).

What Makes This Job Different

  • Not another cog in the wheel: you won’t get lost in a large firm. You’ll be a core team member with visibility, influence, and room to grow
  • Start-up energy, public-sector stability: The pace and ownership of a startup, with the stability and mission of a public sector agency
  • Real-world impact: your work will direct support climate resilience, aging infrastructure, and regulatory compliance while keeping costs affordable for ratepayers

Who You Are

You are energized by solving messy problems, improving efficiency, and seeing your work influence real-word outcomes. You are:

  • Deeply client-focused and motivated to help them solve their toughest problems
  • Exceptionally good at building trust, reading the room, and representing clients thoughtfully with stakeholders at all levels
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and great at creating structure where none yet exists
  • Highly organized, with a talent for turning complexity into actionable roadmaps and work plans
  • A self-starter who manages time, priorities, and deadlines with ease
  • A clear, confident communicator (written, visual, and verbal)
  • A presentation deck pro who translates complex analyses into crisp, compelling stories
  • A data-driven problem solver (Excel is a must, Power BI is a plus) who loves spotting patterns and building tools

You have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, urban planning, economics or a related technical field
  • At least 3 years of professional experience (a master’s degree may be substituted for one year of the required professional experience)
  • Experience in consulting, planning, project management and/or working with public infrastructure

If you don’t necessarily meet all the requirements listed here, we still encourage you to apply because we value curiosity, adaptability, and the ability to learn just as much as a perfect résumé.
