Position Overview:
The City of Mountain Home is seeking a skilled and experienced Shop Foreman to supervise mechanics, oversee fleet maintenance operations, and lead the City’s CDL training efforts. This position plays a key role in ensuring the safety, readiness, and operational efficiency of the City’s vehicle fleet. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader with hands-on mechanical expertise and experience with CDL training and compliance.
Essential Job Duties:
Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise 2–5 shop mechanics and oversee daily repair/maintenance workflow
- Train staff in repair techniques, safety, equipment use, and CDL pre-trip/backing procedures
Fleet Maintenance & Operations
- Maintain and operate tools/equipment used in fleet mechanical repair
- Oversee refueling operations at jobsites
- Manage ordering, receiving, and inventory of parts
- Assist crews with mechanical repairs and maintenance tasks
- Stage and maintain CDL training vehicles, cones, and layouts
Equipment Inspection & Safety
- Perform and verify daily fleet inspections
- Ensure safe operation and proper maintenance of all vehicles and equipment
- Coordinate CDL readiness tasks including defect reporting and air-brake checks
Training & Compliance
- Coordinate ELDT-compliant CDL training with registered providers
- Maintain CDL theory, behind-the-wheel, practice, and testing records
- Support staff through Arkansas CDL testing steps
Emergency Response
- Be available for emergency call-outs, including nights and weekends
Other Duties:
- Perform additional tasks as assigned to support fleet operations
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
Experience:
- 5–8 years of relevant mechanical/maintenance experience
- Minimum 2 years as a CDL driver with tanker endorsement or CDL instructor experience
Knowledge:
- Mechanical repair techniques for diesel and gasoline engines
- FMCSA ELDT requirements and CDL testing processes
- Pre-trip inspections, air-brake systems, and standard backing maneuvers
- Tools, equipment, and safety procedures in fleet maintenance
Abilities:
- Diagnose and repair fleet vehicles and equipment
- Operate and maintain specialized repair tools
- Communicate clearly and train adult learners
- Organize schedules, tasks, and multiple priorities
- Maintain accurate training and compliance documentation
Licensing & Requirements:
- Valid Class A CDL with tanker endorsement (required)
- Must pass background check
Physical Requirements:
- Regular lifting, carrying, bending, climbing, operating equipment, and working outdoors in varied weather
- Ability to lift 75+ lbs when necessary
- Work may involve confined spaces, heavy machinery, and exposure to extreme temperatures
- Ability to respond to emergency situations under pressure
Pay: $19.50 - $27.61 per hour
