PRIMARY PURPOSE : The Structural Design Engineer is responsible for designing and analyzing structural systems for building and infrastructure projects, ensuring safety, functionality, and compliance with codes and standards. This role develops and reviews engineering drawings and specifications, conducts load analysis and material selection, coordinates with project stakeholders, and performs site inspections to verify construction aligns with design intent. Additionally, the Structural Design Engineer contributes to project planning, mentors junior staff, and may participate in forensic investigations as needed.

Must hold California P.E. license. Prefer candidate reside in greater Sacramento area.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs detailed structural calculations for building and infrastructure projects.

  • Develops and reviews engineering drawings, models, and specifications.

  • Conducts load analysis and material selection to optimize designs.

  • Ensures designs comply with applicable building codes and standards.

  • Coordinates and consults with architects, contractors, and other stakeholders regarding project scope, needs, and work.

  • Performs site visits to inspect construction for compliance with design intent.

  • Contributes to preparation of project schedule, detailed project budget, and presentation to the client along with on-going client communication as directed by senior team members.

  • Educates and mentors Structural EITs and Interns, as needed, regarding technical and operational facets of business.

  • Depending on candidate/hire, may perform forensic investigations (failure analysis, evidence collection and analysis, forensic testing, and/or writing expert reports) in addition to design engineering role.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Travel as required

Education & Licensing

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Professional Engineering (PE) licenses is required.

Experience

Five (5) years of experience in structural engineering or equivalent combination of experience and education required.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Demonstrates proficiency in AutoCAD/Revit/RISA 3D/RAM Structural System/ENERCALC Software

  • Advanced knowledge of structural software tools and materials.

  • Familiarity with seismic, wind, and other lateral load requirements.

  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills.

  • PC literate, including Microsoft Office products

  • Analytical and interpretive skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Ability to create and complete comprehensive, accurate and constructive written reports

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Be able to lift/carry up to 50 pounds

  • Be able to push/pull up to 100 pounds

  • Be able to drive up to 4 hours per day.

  • Must have continual use of manual dexterity.

  • Computer keyboarding, travel as required

As required by law, Sedgwick provides a reasonable range of compensation for roles that may be hired in jurisdictions requiring pay transparency in job postings. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and cost of specific location. For the jurisdiction noted in this job posting only, the range of starting pay for this role is $120,000 - $ 130,000 . A comprehensive benefits package is offered including but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, 401k and matching, PTO, disability and life insurance, employee assistance, flexible spending or health savings account, and other additional voluntary benefits.
