Structural Engineer

We are seeking a collaborative, detail oriented, and safety focused structural engineer to design, analyze, and deliver safe, code compliant structural systems for laboratory, pilot plant, and light industrial facilities. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams across R&D, process engineering, facilities, architecture, and construction to develop practical, cost effective structural solutions that support research, pilot operations, and manufacturing. This role requires strong technical judgment, clear cross team communication, hands on design and review skills, and a commitment to safety, constructability, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform structural analysis and design of steel, concrete, masonry, and timber framing systems for buildings, mezzanines, platforms, equipment supports, and foundations to meet project requirements and applicable codes and standards (IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE, local codes).
  • Develop structural calculations, load cases, and assumptions for seismic, wind, live, dead, equipment, and process loads; produce clear, well documented engineering workpapers suitable for permitting and regulatory review.
  • Produce and review structural construction documents, including plans, sections, details, schedules, and specifications; coordinate with architects, MEP, process engineers, and contractors to ensure integrated design solutions and constructability.
  • Perform finite element and hand calculations, model structures in engineering software (e.g., ETABS, SAP2000, RISA, STAAD, or similar), and interpret results to guide design decisions and optimize material use.
  • Support site investigations, field observations, and structural inspections during construction and installation; prepare field reports, as built sketches, and change notices where necessary.
  • Lead structural peer reviews, coordinate third party design checks, and participate in constructability and safety reviews to identify and mitigate risks early in the project lifecycle.
  • Evaluate existing structures for modifications, equipment loads, and seismic/structural upgrades; develop retrofit and strengthening solutions that minimize downtime and cost while ensuring safety.
  • Support procurement and vendor selection by reviewing vendor submittals, shop drawings, and material certificates for structural compliance and compatibility with project requirements.
  • Participate in root cause investigations and structural failure analyses when applicable; develop corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) and update standards, details, and procedures accordingly.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of standard drawing details, design guides, and technical standards; mentor junior staff and foster an inclusive, team oriented engineering culture.
Required Qualifications - Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • PE (Professional Engineer) registration in the United States or the ability to obtain licensure within a defined timeframe is preferred; EIT or equivalent early career credentials considered for junior roles.
  • 3+ years of practical structural design and analysis experience in building, industrial, or laboratory projects; experience with foundations, mezzanines, and equipment support structures strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software (e.g., ETABS, SAP2000, RISA, STAAD, SAFE) and general productivity tools (Excel); experience with BIM/Revit for structural modeling advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of building codes, load combinations, seismic design provisions, and material design standards (AISC, ACI, ASCE).
  • Demonstrated ability to produce clear engineering calculations, technical specifications, and construction documents; familiarity with QA/QC practices for design deliverables.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills: able to prepare concise technical reports, present findings to cross functional teams, and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Commitment to safety, sustainability, and regulatory compliance; awareness of construction safety practices and site hazard mitigation.
  • Strong problem solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple project priorities in a fast paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications - Domain & Tools
  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering or related field preferred for roles with greater technical responsibility.
  • Experience with laboratory, pilot plant, or industrial facility projects and familiarity with process equipment loads, vibration criteria, and specialized support requirements.
  • Experience with BIM workflows, Revit structure modeling, and coordination across multidisciplinary models (Navisworks, BIM 360).
  • Familiarity with geotechnical report interpretation, foundation design, and soil structure interaction considerations beneficial for site specific projects.
  • Training or certifications in seismic design, structural forensics, welding codes, or quality management (ISO) are advantageous.
Work Environment & Compensation
  • Full time position within an interdisciplinary engineering and facilities organization; work includes office based design, site visits, and periodic presence in laboratory and pilot plant environments.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience, including health coverage, retirement plan options, paid time off, and professional development support.
  • Opportunities for training, certifications, conference participation, and career growth within a diverse, inclusive, and safety focused workplace.
  • We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and foster a respectful work environment that supports work life balance and employee well being.
